Archived ECM Bad????

Saturday I went to to start my 2000 man 5 spd and it would not crank, gauges come on, lamps and idiot lights okay. Lift pump doesnt run. It flashed a quick code but I didnt catch it in time. After a tow home I cycled the key and the only code I get is "P done". then back to odo, thats it. I put my hyper tech scan tool on the obdII and it says it cant find the vin or cant communicate with the computer. Tried another scan tool and pretty much the same thing.

So what does this lead too. Fried ECM? For several years the lift pump hasn't come on when the key is turned to the run position for a couple of seconds like it once did, but it will run if I bump the starter and I run about 13 psi normal driving.

Any Ideas?????

mine did a similar thing once.
Un-hook both batteries for about 30 minutes. re hook and check voltage (just to make sure)
and try a re-start

Disconnected them saturday and threw a charge on them all night and re hooked em up sunday, still no go. Thanks for the thought though "J".

Sounds like starter contacts. Try tapping the starter with a hammer and see if it cranks. The contacts are behind where the wires make up on the solenoid. Maybe time to order new contacts from Genos or Larry B.

Sounds like the starter is what most often is blamed so I will focus attention on that. I am still confused about the role the starter plays in the disappearance of the ECM according to the scan tools.

I hate to pull the starter if I don't have to.

went my starter died, it did it with no waring.

from fine to dead in 10 minutes.
(yes contacts, however i just go a reman one. )

Try checking the #9, 10A Engine Fuse in the panel on the driver's side dash. I had this happen to me a couple of months ago when I installed a Raptor fuel pump on the frame. Couldn't get the pump to run when I turned the ignition on, or on bump start. Hooked up my SuperChip programmer to read the codes and it read the same thing, "Can't communicate with ECM" Apparently the fuse tap for the Edge turbo timer came loose and so did the Engine fuse. Reseated the fuse, bought a better tap and it fired right up. Hope you find it is something this simple. Good luck.

I ordered new contacts and plunger. Its a low cost way to start throwing parts at a problem. I threw a beatin' on the starter last night without any luck. I did finally get some codes off it. 1693 and 1388. I swapped all the like solenoids and that did nothing as well, so I don't think its the ASD sol. I will check the #9 fuse later today.

I just pulled the starter and tore it apart. The battery side contact was worn down to about half the thickness of a playing card, the other one seemed like it still has quite a bit of life left in it. I will change them both when the new ones arrive next week maybe.

Got the new contacts today and installed them after work. Put the starter back together and re installed it, hit the key and nothing. I was mad enough to stomp bunnies. After more testing I confirmed that the starter and solenoid were good. Turned out to be a 10 amp ignition fuse. Don't know if the starter had anything to do with it blowing? Starts good now. Who knows?

Good to hear your running again. With a contact that thin you did not have long to go any way. If that caused the fuse to blow who knows for sure. One thing that is for sure is that you will be the first to know.
