Truck & Tractor pull from the Colorado State Fair:

Hyundai/ Cummins partnership

The verdict is still out on the final diagnosis... . but here is what happened... Driving down the road Saturday, truck rolling about 30 mph off the throttle. Felt the engine shutter pretty hard, hear something metal on metal hit, then grinding noise. Attempt to tip in on the throttle, get no response from the boost gauge. Get tons of shuttering from the truck, and lots of grinding/whining. hhmmm. . but no CEL for low boost??. Get the truck out of the highway, shift to neutral, throttle up and can only get about 2700 rpm with tons of shaking... Boost gauge makes no moves... zero!. Shift into drive and attempt to stall the engine against the brake and see if I can generate boost, engine will barely climb to 1000RPM and zero boost, tons of noise, and shaking, yet still no cel??. Spend 30 minutes trying to limp it 2 miles so the wrecker can come and get it!. Shut the engine down, and you hear grinding crashing noises for approx. 15-20 seconds after the engine stops.

I am 100% confident the turbo has failed, question is was it a simple turbo failure, or have I lost one of the notorious exhaust valves???. MY truck is the only one in our fleet that has yet to lose an engine... and has almost double the miles of the others when they failed!!. .

Was it Ferd that once used the line about having a better idea in their advertising (lies)?

The stupid, extremely complex and illogical design for the latest Ferd diesel failure is proving once again that Ferd does not have a better idea.

Only a group of academics knowing nothing about the real world of light truck use could have conceived that nightmare of an engine.

Well, got it back a couple hours ago. They put a turbo on it. Scary that they did not pull the aftercooler to clean it out. . but oh well. . The service advisor said it was good to go, but he was anticipating replacing the engine soon. He admitted that the last 5 6. 7L Fords they replaced turbos on, came back in within a couple weeks with failed engines... . The Ford dealers are finally acknowledging the 6. 7L has issues... .

I am NOT laughing at others' misfortune, and I am fully aware that our beloved Ram trucks also have some inherent design problems, mostly due to an under engineered front end and even not quite fine enough oem fuel filtration, but I HAVE found, for your reading pleasure, that there is an entire forum (not a thread, but a FORUM) titled "6. 7 Motor Problems" over at Powerstroke.org--

http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-7-motor-problems/

And another FORUM called "6. 7 transmission problems"

http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-7-transmission-problems/

And another called "6. 7 Drivetrain problems"

http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/6-7-drivetrain-problems/

The 6. 7 Motor problems has the most threads out of the three.

Pulled onto the freeway the other day and just ahead of me was a new ford. He was blowing blue smoke out the tail pipe and it smelled like an old car with a worn out engine... ... ... ED

cummins is the best

The only Ferd diesel I have ever had was a 2000 EX. Only problem I had was a small fuel leak. I like the post about the turbo blowing. I guess Ford guys don't learn. That is why there are so many new Fords on the road I guess. Sure glad I have my Cummins.

blew the charge air intake pipe less than 24 hours after getting the new turbo... . its a plastic spin welded tube held on by a wire retainer... anyway, it shattered... Installed a piece of wore out silicone blue coolant hose to keep it going long enough to get to a local dealership for a replacement... Back running again. . The dealer that had the tube in stock had a 2012 C&C truck with the cab off, they were installing a new engine. . !!. .
I used to look around on the PSN forums some... but talk about a grumpy bunch of Furd Turds..... say ANYTHING about a problem with a 6. 7L Ford engine and they gripe like a bunch of menopausal women. .
The local dealership that serviced mine has several used 2011-2012 Ford C&C trucks on their lot right now... One of them I know for a fact has a replacement engine assembly in it. The former owner was absolutely livid when the engine blew... of course, couple this with repeated transmission issues, limp mode issues, horrible fuel economy, and a turbo failure before the engine failure... . Once can understand why he got rid of it. Really hope Ford can correct the failures of this engine design... Its their baby this time...

Mike,

I went over to that forum after I read the link above. The hatred they express for anyone who reports an engine failure was amazing. It was clear to me as a reader and one who knows a little bit about Furd's history with the Sick. Ohh and the Sick. Four Navistar engines that the posters reporting engine failures were telling the truth. They weren't criticizing Furds or even their own truck, just reporting their engine had failed and sounding worried and sad. The forum members attacked them accusing them of being trolls! That's the same thing that was happening back around 2005-2007 when the Sick. Ohhs were cratering right and left.

They eat their own when Furd products begin failing.

Mike,

You must have read the same one that I did with the engine failure at 22,000 miles, they jumped all over that poor guy.

A few stuck up for him and one expressed that it was no wonder nobody wanted to post with that going on so they are not all bad.

Makes one appreciate just how good a forum ours is... ..... ;)

Mike.

What a travasty, I cant imagine being treated as poorly as some of those guys. Seems like the same corporate FORD crap to me. . One of my friends went though 4 6. 0s in two 350 Fords, the worst problem is how poorly Ford treated him. Trucks in the shop for months at a time, denying or trying to deny warrenty till he finally hired a lawyer. Even if Ford had the best drivetrain in the industry I would never own one for fear of a warrenty denial. .

my favorite mechanic's saying

ashes to ashes dust to dust if it wasn't for Ford's my tool's would rust:-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf:D:D

These 6. 7L Fords are iron... its a CGI block, (Compacted Graphite Iron) But, the heads are aluminum, the valve covers and oil pan are "composite material" A. K. A. plastic.

The Ford forums are absolutely horrible... I gave up when I ended up in a fuel mileage discussion about the C&C trucks... . Our fuel consumption is averaged over each fuel purchase, monthly, quarterly, and annually. So I can look at almost any time and see my fuel efficiency... when I attempted to share this info with the OP, other geniuses were quick to accuse me of trolling, outright lying, etc... I threw my hands up... . Its not like I purchase the fuel for this truck, I could care less what it gets, and I think the OP was genuinely wanting some real data... . but the thread went downhill so quick, he couldn't keep it under control...

I'll just stick with my TDR..... !!!

I'm guessing Ford dealers themselves are sick of people coming in with engine problems, transmission issues and high pressure pump issues taking injectors with them. They keep hearing the same thing from everyone and taking a lot of heat with no relief. So they start ignoring customers especially after all the 6. 0, 6. 4 and now 6. 7 problems starting from 2003. Almost 10 years of warranty crap after warranty crap then crap after warranty over and more lawsuits on the way.

As long as people keep buying Ford products, Ford keeps their pockets lined with cash and will create more garbage.

Ford gives Navistar the boot over all these 6. 0 and 6. 4 problems and now have major problems with their own in house built engines.

The oval around Ford means always circling their mistakes.

I was at a camp site in Baker City Or last week. The guy next to me had an 04 ford diesel. He bought it with about 48k on it, and it now has about 53k on it. So, it is pretty new to him.

Truck was in the shop (left him stranded). Blew a head gasket. His truck had been in the local dealers shop for a couple of days and he wasnt sure when he would get it back. Before I knew what year it was, I asked him if it was still under warranty. He said it was. (he had purchased an extended warranty when he bought the truck, luck for him) He told me, for the repair, they would have to pull the engine. It would cost over $4000 for the repair (good thing he had the extended warranty)

He was lucky he broke down where he was (near a city). It had been his plan to go up to northern Idaho to do some fly fishing about 40 miles off road in the mountains.

He said he might rethink his choice of truck.

I feel sorry for your campsite neighbor. The '04 Furd Sick. Ohhs were high on the list of sorriest engines ever built. If he puts any heavy towing miles on it he'll be experiencing all the true joys of owning a Sick. Ohh - a catastrophic engine failure and the need for a complete replacement with a bill of approximately $16k and climbing.
