Unfortunatley, it is the stop and go driving that triggers the regen. The low load, cold temps (not being worked) trigger the EGR which causes the soot, fills the DPF, and creates the need for a regen.
The switch to DEF is supposed to drastically reduce the need for EGR, which results in less soot developed, and less regens.
To comment on your question: I doubt it. I know some people have disabled the EGR without removing the DPF. That would reduce the need for regen cycles. But that goes back to the illegal comment. Even a Smarty is "technically" illegal. Modifying the emissions equipment/programming at all is "technically" illegal.
