The importance of using a paper air filter

Do you install the software immediately before you remove the EGR/DPF or immediately after? Nowhere in the instructions do I find the order, if it matters. At one time I thought I saw that you have to install the software first, but can't find it.

I would say immediately after you remove the components. If you do it before I think the filters would plug up because the smarty would reprogram the ecm to not regen. I would install the software at the same time as doing the deletes.

You can do either first and drive SHORT distances if needed. If you have the programmer first, the PDF can plug up because there will be no regens. How long this takes depends on how you drive. If you delete first you will have the CEL and LOTS of codes but it will run and drive. Best way is like what was already posted, do both before you restart the truck, but it makes no difference what order they are completed

Got it all done. Reset the overhead mpg (was 13. 2 which is normal). Have it now on #1. Drove it about 50 miles and it is showing 18. 2. Mostly interstate but about 5 miles of city driving. I know the overhead isn't accurate but that is a real improvement and the truck runs good with no codes.

Does anyone make a program that allows the DPF and the CAT to stay in place but lessen the Re-Gen cycles or allow you to tell the truck when to re-gen? It seems that my truck will wait until I'm on a short trip with alot of stop and go driving to go into re-gem If I could tell it when to re-gen when I'm on a good highway run I think the MPG's would be much better and the DPF would get a much better cleaning out. I know the Commercial trucks like the one used to deliver my Heating oil have this feature. Any thoughts from the guys that make the SMARTY? I don't want to make my truck illeagal by removing everything.

Unfortunatley, it is the stop and go driving that triggers the regen. The low load, cold temps (not being worked) trigger the EGR which causes the soot, fills the DPF, and creates the need for a regen.
The switch to DEF is supposed to drastically reduce the need for EGR, which results in less soot developed, and less regens.

To comment on your question: I doubt it. I know some people have disabled the EGR without removing the DPF. That would reduce the need for regen cycles. But that goes back to the illegal comment. Even a Smarty is "technically" illegal. Modifying the emissions equipment/programming at all is "technically" illegal.

Of the few friends I have with 6. 7's (all are now deleted) a few of them would watch close for regens, and they both found that they occurred about every 150-175 miles, regardless of city/fwy/towing.

I think the only way to reduce regens would be to make it burn cleaner, and if there was a way to do that I am sure Cummins would have.

This whole idea that makes the enging run poorly and make more soot that has to be burned (re-gen cycle) off is so wrong. Almost sounds like the oil companys came up with this system... .

Considering what is happening right now STOP the whole delete process NOW. You may find yourself without support for the software and having to spend $$$ to put it back stock.

Right now, I would not consider doing ANYTHING to these trucks but drive them.

I almost don't want to say I told you so but the government can't stand by in the shadows and watch blatant disregard by thousands of citizens. well at least when it comes to smog laws

Agreed. After what happened at SEMA several years ago I am surprised it took THIS long to see a move. :(

Would it be possible to get a sticky put up with a list of the download names and what years they are for. Possibly with locations to get them? I was going to wait until after the first of the year to do my deletes, but good ol uncle sams forcing me to go a little quicker. Would be good to be able to get these files and save them for future needs down the road. I assume the smarty or H&S programming can be backed up to a laptop and reloaded if ever the case may arise. Im real concerned about what type of support may be available by the programmer manufacturers in the future. Not sure the TDR could host them here for members only or even if they would be willing to do this, would they be sticking their necks out for an EPA finger slapping or not. Would really suck to do the deletes and then have a problem without a backup. I've seen sites where they are hosted, but I would be concerned about corrupt files and such. Would be much safer here I would believe.
