We used to have a large German Shepherd - my favorite breed - and asked our insurance agent about posting warning signs as to "Beware of Dog", and the agent advised against it, stating that a sign like that can be used in court in case of an "incident", to prove we were negligent in knowingly putting visitors at risk by keeping that dog around...

Exactly what we were told, had to sign a waiver excluding our German Shepard from our Homeowner's Insurance. Our Boy has never bitten a soul, but has been more effective than any of our signs. Here's Fritz, pure black, pure bred, from the Bear Cub Kennel Club.

I realize the signs are a means to deter, if you ever had to back up their meaning, some would claim premeditation... I hate lawyers.

No trespassing!

Survivors will be Shot!

You can run?

But you'll just die, tired!

Homeowner confronts perp in living room; "Hey perp, I know Say Foo"!

Perp; Sneers, "Say What"?

We just lost our German Shepard at Christmas. He would have been 15 this April. Over the last couple of years, the warning sign for him would have read "Warning. Dog may fall asleep!" :-laf Sure miss that old guy.

Why do you have him on a dog leash? Our insurance said that IF YOU DONT HAVE IT POSTED FOR DOGS and they bite then you are at risk. If you have it posted AND WE DO they are forewarned. The Dogs NEVER go to the front pasture unless Penny or myself are out there they stay in the back by the house. The question that we have DOES THIS LIKE A PRIVATE DRIVE or a COUNTY ROAD The only time that we leave the gates open is when we are expecting somone and dont want them to wait out front untill we go out to open them up. Some just like to look around WELL DONT LOOK HERE!!!!

We have a German Shepard/Chow mix, Gyp! Very well behaved year old pup! Wife got her from animal rescue, back in September!
Very nice dog. Somebody spent a bunch of time training her!

This is our sightseer/unwanted sales call prevention device. If you don't have the gate code, you don't get in. :D

There's that gate again, I still can't believe you have a gate and everything... All I have is an old logging chain. . :D

Texas looks pretty cool.

Mike.

Can tell you dont have much snow BILL :-laf

That's why we chose to live in Texas. :D

We did receive 8" on last Christmas Day and I had to shovel the snow away from the area where the gate sweeps before opening it. It was the second white Christmas I've witnessed in TX in my lifetime. It we had very much snow, I would raise the gate. The gate was installed before the asphalt driveway and it's close.

My uncles got a "slide gate" that runs off a chain and sprocket and runs parallel with the fence. It opens and closes regardless of snow conditions as it only has to push snow as wide as the gate which is 3 inches or so. Hes got a sign that says

No trespassing.

Violaters will be shot

Survivors will be shot again

Did you buy the gates and opener or just the opener and then make the gates?

I purchased the gates. They are Priefert lightweight tubular gates made here in Mount Pleasant at the Priefert factory. http://www.priefert.com/ProductDetails/gates-264/economy-gates-47/rg16 I wanted light weight gates that won't "pull" the gate posts over (been there, done that) and also have much less wind drag on the openers during high wind conditions.

I purchased the gate opener at Tractor Supply. It's a Mighty Mule Model FM502 with a 20 watt solar panel. http://www.mightymule.com/gate-openers-fm502.htm I had the opener professionally installed by a gate/fence contractor. I followed the contractor's advice and don't use the little 12-volt sealed built in battery that comes with the control box. I use a group 24 marine battery instead. It lasts much longer and is less affected by cold weather and it has enough reserve campacity to continue to operating the gate after several days of cold cloudy weather. The contractor installed a 20-watt solar panel instead of the 5-watt that Mighty Mule sells.

My wife really appreciates the electric gate opener after having to get out of the vehicle in all kinds of weather to open/close our gate at our previous place for over 18 years.
