2013 owners, I need your help.

Does a 2013 2500 have a diesel particulate filter AND the diesel exhaust fluid? This is probably an obvious answer but... I'm considering trading my 2007 2500 for a 2013 2500 and went to the dealership to shop around. The salesman told me the diesel exhaust fluid REPLACES the diesel particulate filter on the 2013s. However, after reading some threads it appears that the 2013s have both. What's the story?

Thanks for your help guys.

Never listen to a mindless salesman. The 2013 has a DPF plus the DEF. I just purchased a 2013 last week and love it thus far..... very quiet! As a matter of fact, I haven't even updated my sig yet.

Sales, there should be no reason for a sales representative not to know something as basic as your question. He should read there own literature on the Dodge Ram before he sells one. I went through that in 06 for the MY07 C&C, but seeing how that was a new product at the time and the 6. 7 was not yet out in the regular pickups, I could understand not knowing answers to the questions I had. I ended up copying it all, and turning all of my research on the C&C, to the salesman. Basic questions I had at the time were HP/TQ, EB, G56 verses Aison transmissions, and not even the Factory representative got the HP/TQ right. Because I delayed my order, hoping the HP/TQ would increase on the C&C when the 07. 5 6. 7 CTD started production, it cost me an extra 2K.

For 2013 Rams, we have two big units but no muffler in the exhaust system. The first unit is two-part. First half is a diesel oxidation catalyst, and the second half is a diesel particulate filter. The second unit follows the DEF injector and mixer in the transition pipe and has the Selective Catalyst Reduction functions to convert ammonia from the urea and NOx from the exhaust into nitrogen and water.

2013 if proper fuel and driving it should NEVER to go into REGEN, I have 2900 miles on My 13 and it has not went into REGEN, I just separated the Exhaust its cleaner then a babies bottle. A thin coating of soot, Mixed driving towing.

SCR replaces the NOX adsorber catalyst that was used on the '07. 5- 2012 trucks. When Cummins met the NOX standards in 2007 three years ahead of schedule, the Punishment Agency had not approved the use of DEF because it required action by the operator of the vehicle, whereas the adsorber did not. The particulate filter is still used, but should require much less frequent regeneration, as the engine can be tuned to lower engine-out emissions, probably close to the engine in my signature truck.

With SCR replacing the NOX absorber along with heavy use of EGR which causes soot deposits in the EGR cooler, is regular EGR cooler cleaning still required/necessary?

You can make a nice cap from a 1. 5" ABS plumbing cap. Cut it down to . 8" and chamfer the top edge. It will fit in the fill pocket allowing the door to seal with its rubber gasket, and is a snug fit on the filler neck. Cost will be about $2-3.

All,,

Thanks for clearing this up for me. The salesman was a nice enough guy but clearly more geared towards the transactions side of the house then the product knowledge side of the house. I thought no DPF sounded too good to be true.

From what I'm reading here the DEF significantly reduces the regen time, which sounds good. For those of you using your 2013s as the daily driver, I'm assuming the longer intervals between regens is better for the stop & go driving in traffic?

Thanks again all,

Mitch

Bill, you sound like you are sniffing around like youre fixing to buy a new truck???? lol

I'm trying to restrain my self by finding excuses and reasons not to trade in a perfect garage kept '03 dually with only 40k miles. :-laf The $$$ probably will be the limiting factor.

Yeah, sure. Try to walk off the disease, or try to use a gas pig Ram to cure it. Won't work. I once rented a new 2002 1500 and less than a year later, the disease had progressed so far I had to buy my 2004 Cummins in Fall 2003. If you try to ignore the symptoms, you break into a severe rash whenever you get near to a 2013 Turbo Diesel. Your gas pig is worn out by 100K miles when the diesel is just nicely broken in. Ram knows our weaknesses, too. Now that the Aisin is available in the 3500 pickups, we can get "too good" a trans, just like we get "too good" a diesel for a mere pickup truck.
