Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting 12 ga Choice?

As the above states, any luck? I have found a hodge podge of stuff but nothing to tie it all together. I am in need of . 224 preferably in sierra? Anyone have some leads as to who has stuff?

Midwayusa, Brunoshooters.com, Wideners.com. Powder Valley. All are short term as the supplies are bought up quickly.

Hi Mr. H, good to see you stopping by.
I really don't know my powders from my primers, but recently I traveled the I-81 corridor from PA to TN. We stopped off frequently for a few reasons and wherever there was a big box store like Dicks, Bass, or a WalMart, I ran in to scope out the ammo situation. It was pretty dramatic to see empty shelves with maybe one or 2 jars of propellant here and there, and only certain rifle caliber ammo present in low quantity. You can forget any 22 stuff as that's rationed everywhere or you need to be in the know when the truck comes. A co worker is an avid reloader, and this topic was in discussion recently in the lunch room. There's a high volume dealer in NJ who served all the needs, and now he's pretty much out of business.

Wayne,
Its good to be peakin' in once in a while! Still to busy to spend a lot of time!
With the recent flooding, we will be scrambling until the snow flies!
Reloading components are available. You just need to be able to be opportunistic, I reckon.
Heres a web site that shows who has what, in real time!

I just checked one of my online wholesale account. There are plenty of 55gr Sierra bullets available, Spire point and HP, as well as the 53gr match. There are a few of the 77 and 80gr match bullets available.....

There are a few Nosler 55gr Varmageddon in bulk packs of 250 and 500, as well as some 1,000 count 77gr match bullets, and quite a few bulk 250count 40 Ballistic tips.

All my usual suspects for online reloading components (that aren't gouging) are hit and miss. I suspect much like the box stores.

I got caught short on bullets too. Missed it by 1 day when I was going to commit to another 6k of Hornady 55gr. I was able to get powder and some bench rest primers, just no projectiles. I vowed that I would not take part in the panic buying, then Newtown happened and the panic buying went full bore. Combined with the gun laws that were threatened and did go into effect, and the various Govt agencies that put in massive orders for ammo (Why NOAA needed 40k . 40cal HP ammo is still a mystery to me), the market has not calmed down much.

There are plenty of . 224 bullets available, but most of them are hunting/varmit. Not a whole lot of target/plinking so the cost is a bit high for my taste to burning up 300-500 on a range practice day, or competition match.

Probably going to have to wait for all the BS overseas to calm down and keep an eye on military pull down components.

Sticks!
How about a thread devoted to building AR platform rifles from stripped upper/lower?
I've been reading some of your posts. Between You, Patriot and HHhuntitall, I believe we could have a top notch thread that could become a "sticky"?
Yeah I know the "books" are out there. But there is nothing like a discussion, in process, project style learning activity for us AR-"novices"!
Now, just so you know that I am not just some "wet-behind-the-ears" wise guy. This is a serious inquiry!
I had my teeth sharpened on an as issue M-16A1, and hated the things after having a FINE M-14!!! I never learned about the concepts that made them into the fine rifle they are today. Frankly, I have been bit hard. Yes I can go to school, and just might do that in the future, but I enjoy informal learning here, also. Q&A and new Friends to boot!
There are so many good folks on TDR with wide ranges of interests and expertise. How about sharing some of yours?

GHarman -

There are many forums already dedicated to the subject. I can understand your desire to have our own little subforum here on the subject, but this is a Diesel Truck forum, and what we have is sufficient.

I would strongly recommend reading the stickies in the following two links;

http://m4carbine.net/forumdisplay.php?f=3

http://m4carbine.net/forumdisplay.php?f=4

If you do register with the forum, they can be a bit short, bordering on abrasive with newbs ~ NOT for the soft skinned. "Read more, speak less, use the SEARCH button". Centuries combined of hands on, real world experience on the platform over there, all typed out, just need to read it.

I'm still a "Newb" by comparison.

I've spent the time and money to get the professional training on the operation of the platform, and (regrettably) am better than a majority of our troops that are currently in harms way, yet a paltry cadet that just knows the fundamentals compared to a majority of the long term membership on M4C.

There is also a Colorado based owners group, http://www.ar-15. co/forum.php?, where you can learn a little, and find out about local shooting events and locations.

The IDPA ruined me on static lane shooting for handgun (READ - public range and gun clubs to whit there is years long waiting lists to even get in), and now I am in desperate need to find a location to shoot my rifles out to at least 400y, and reasonably close to the Denver area to keep up those skills that I was taught before I loose them. It would appear that in Colorado it is a closely guarded secret, and it's usually a guy who knows a guy that has property that allows a select few to shoot there. I've received some invites, but they are all to places that are at least a 2 1/2 hour drive to get there.

Had a place just north of Castle Rock, but they (city) pulled an Imminent Domain on it, along with 10 other property owners there for a freakin' bike path up the middle.

Sticks,
Have you considered Colorado Rifle Club, North of Byers (multiple shooting ranges including a 1000 yard range with butts), Golden Gun Club, out by Watkins or Buffalo Creek Gun Club, near Bailey. Buffalo Creek Gun Club is open for new members! (600 yard Military Range with butts!) BCGC has a booth/table at the Tanner Gun Shows. Yes 2-2 1/2 hour trip is normal. Presently, 4 Counties are working with the US Forest Service to open multiple public shooting facilities in Clear Creek, Gilpin Boulder and Larimer Counties, in the National Forest. It is a past due push!

Yes we are a Diesel Web site. We also discuss indepth welding and many other subjects. My skin is sufficiently thick but I have little tolerance for B. S. . Making room for individual personalities is not a bad attribute!
I've met some really outstanding people on TDR! I would love to meet more as well as share knowledge!
If you choose not to do this, no hard feelings. It doesnt hurt to ask!
Respectfully,

Now this range is certainly not close by but I do frequent the area several times a year and try to make it there when in the area. It is in Carbon County Utah more like a 7 hour drive so of no use to us locally. However the county owns it. It is a nice place albeit in the middle of nowhere. 1000yd range with free use of golf carts, 600 yd range, 100 yd range, some are enclosed and heated, Pistol range with the targets on the wire where you can set the range out to 100ft, some static metal flip targets for pistol at various ranges, I think 4 archery ranges, an urban area shooting setup(it may be for leo training only) as well as a cowboy town shooting setup, on site camping for rvs and tents, cost a whopping $7 a day(used to be only 5) to use or 125 annual pass. Whenever I have been there there has only been one or two other people there or I had the range to myself. I have not been there on a weekend nor close to hunting season I have no doubt it gets busier. It serves a fairly small population of people Price, Utah is like 20k people, some other small towns in the area of 2k or under so it does not see too much pressure
http://www.carbon.utah.gov/Departments/NorthSpringsShootingRange.aspx all this to say it sure would be nice to have something like that in the area open to the public and if they can make it work in that underpopulated area you would certainly think some of the richest counties in the country could make it work.

RL 15, BLC-2, Varget..... all impossible to find. I've had 3 5lb kegs on order for almost a year.....

H1000 is same story. I finally got some RL25 and H4831 from Powder Valley earlier in the year, but that was almost 6 months... ... :(

I'm down to my last 7 or 8 lbs of var-get.

I have a bunch of 4895 PD that I need to work up some loads for as soon as I get some free time.

bullets and brass are coming back, but still havent seen any decent amount of primers, and some places have started stocking vihtavuori or however its spelled because the domestic stuff is gone. all the stuff ive found recently 45 auto and . 308 brass, and about 1500 bullets has been from cabelas and midway. it pops up and gets bought quick so check often and you should get something.

Makes me sick. My last buy was $499 delivered for 6k Hornaday 55gr FMJBT w/canalure... and that was in early 2012.
