As the above states, any luck? I have found a hodge podge of stuff but nothing to tie it all together. I am in need of . 224 preferably in sierra? Anyone have some leads as to who has stuff?
Well, I have a partial box of Sierra 52gr HPBT on the shelf. I don't load those anymore. Not the large quantity that you're looking for, but it's something.
I think that supplies are coming back, although there are still spot-shortages of specific items and will continue to be for awhile. I have been told that even the manufacturers can't keep components in stock. They'll make a run of "A" caliber or style, then change over the machinery to make a run of "B" caliber or type, and by the time they've finished that and are starting to reset the line for "C" caliber, the warehouse is completely out of "A. " And there are no plans to make any more of "A" until they've made the run of "D", "E", etc. There are also some hard decisions being made to not produce certain calibers or styles ("L" or "M" caliber) so that they can get the machinery reset to make another run of "A. " It's a close-run thing, and that assumes that there are no machinery failures.
Not being familiar with your area, are there any small, family-run stores that you can check? Most of the guys who tell me that they can't get ammo or components are shopping at Cabelas, Walmart, or the big online retailers. Yet my nearby gun store has a fairly good selection of ammo (except no bulk boxes and . 22LR). Similar story with components; when I was up there a couple of weeks ago, they had a fair (but not complete) selection of bullets, and most powders, and plenty of primers. In fact, there were so many primers that he literally had cases of Federal and Winchesters stacked 3' high in the aisles; this was the overflow from the storage locker. Most were Large Rifle or Large Pistol, as he was not getting his normal allottment of Small rifle or pistol primers.
Fortunately, this guy doesn't price-gouge (although he does charge full retail). There is a limit (anywhere from two to ten bricks of primers per customer, depending on what his inventory looks like that day). The limit is because some of his "new" customers turned out to be dealers from other towns. One guy actually had the nerve to ask for a wholesale discount because he was buying them for resale in another state! I wonder how much that guy was charging his customers?
So although the shortages are real (and to a large extent self-inflicted), there are supplies in the pipeline. Get off the beaten path and check some of the smaller stores, you might get lucky.
