BIG,

You if you grow up with it you know what and how to deal with it. But as stated and on the news the SE states aren't really prepared for it I think because it happens so seldom. The news out of ATL was pretty nasty about traffic etc.

This pic is from an SC DOT traffic cam of one of the major bridges in Charleston SC completely empty, it was closed to all traffic. They closed all major bridges in the CHS area and one of them the Ravanel is still closed.

I drove in on the bridge in the pic this AM, I grew up in Cleveland and road salt was a fact of life in the winter, but I've NEVER seen as much salt on a road as they put on this bridge. Its so much they might have to clean some up cause it might act like loose gravel later.

BIG my backyard is my getaway, I've got about 3+ cord of wood all hardwood just for my firepit. Its on just under 3 acres out in the county.

Never been on a snow machine unless my Cub Cadet 100 with chains and plow blade counts.

Not quite the view that you've got BIG but this is what I got to deal with 2 days ago. We've been doing weld repairs on the shell of a reactor, a water line froze over night when the heat trace quit and burst. Apparantly the night shift operators must of been sleeping, because when we went out to start work the following day everything was buried in several inches of ice. It doesn't take long when a 2" line is gushing full tilt in -15 degree weather :-laf Talk about a mess to deal with.

Looks like one of our snow melters a few years ago when the burner quit, and the night guys just walked away from it. :-laf

Gary, I'm surprised they had salt on hand at all. How did they dispense it? I didn't think there were spreaders down there.

Wayne,

Dump truck bed inserts with rotary discharge, like a "smaller" city might have. They also do have plows. They also drip a brine solution of some kind, shows up as streaks on the highway. I think they might have put a certain amount of sand out there too but it looked like they ran wide open in certain areas. It left a mess.

Remember in fairness this is a seldom occurrence in this area. My yard is mostly melted.

I just looked on the traffic map and the Ravanel Bridge in Charleston shows open.

Cleveland mines salt from under Lake Erie, used to see the trucks hauling it regularly.

I sure I will be called out on this but the biggest problem I saw with the whole Atlanta thing was the lemming like drivers all staying on the major roads instead of getting off and easing the traffic congestion by using the back or side roads yes they might have been a little slicker but at least you would have been moving. I bet if the city had to leave for some other natural disaster and the roads were dry you would see the same results.

It's tough all over......I had to find a pair of long pants to wear to work this morning, shorts were not cuttin' it......:)

I'm familiar with those inserts. That brine can be MURDER on vehicles if it's concentrated enough.

Our guy's throw sand/cinder combo if it gets REALLY bad they MIGHT add some salt, but not likely. One thing that they have no problem with is dropping the blade on to the road surface.

Was in Helena today, 23* picking up a load of steel and a fuel tank for the homestead. A driver with a big rig was heading out and asked which way I came into town? he asked if it was ok to drive without chains. I said you wont need iron today, It was snowing really!! bad. He looked up and asked are you sure? I kicked the snow and it acted like sand would, Im positive of it. I finished tying down the tarps said lets go. Never seen or heard someone so paranoid of driving in crap weather. Told him to back off me when I was getting ready to make the turn off the road to the driveway, He said holy crap!!! dude you live up here? :-laf whats it cost to heat your house, so far we are into our 3rd tree this year but the wife likes it toasty, he didn't understand.

Ya JR it looks pretty tough there. It was here also I had to stop to make some yellow snow (the 355th killer in MT) it was hard but had to endure and take a picture while I was out, asked my FIL if he wanted a lime snow cone :-laf

Wasn't that cold the water wasn't starting to freeze yet with the dear, when it gets like the other picture YOU KNOW ITS COLD, that water in moving at a pretty good clip to be having chunks of ice on it.

That is one sweet Big Red. Brings back some memories....

LOL I saw that picture and out loud said "BIG RED!"....think I woke up the pretty half.

I love those things.

Thanks. I bought this thing from a guy a couple years ago. It was a theft recovery that some tweekers busted and tore apart but couldn't fix. I bought some parts, put it all back together and it's been a great machine. Have wanted one since I was a kid :).

BIG,

This ain't gonna meet your standards, but it messed up SC alot. This is the backyard taken a few minutes ago.

Gary

Looks nice Gary, I wish we had some other trees, we have Pine, Tamarack and Cottonwood the last two aren't for 5hit to burn unless you want to smell 5hit burning, but we do have an abundance of Pine!!

BIG, thought this might be something you and your team could do.

Ya Ive seen that!! and I think I posted it on here, its pretty amazing isn't it? Kind of hard on the animals if they slip and go down they could be hurt pretty bad. We have pulled out Penny and the old tractor she got it stuck many a times in the snow and mud cause its only a 2wd but the gang was on earth rather than pavement.

BIG,

The backyard is several varieties of oak with hickory, dogwood, some wild cherry, and long leaf pine. I've burned some LLP aka southern yellow pine and it smokes and sparks. My supply is now about an honest 1 1/2+ cords of oak and I just got a free load of over 1 cord of willow oak. That's the gift horse I shoulda looked in its mouth. I thinks its gonna burn but I'm gonna have to rent a hydraulic spliter. We hit it with a heavy maul and it laughed at us. Finally got one log split and it just tore apart, didn't split. I'm ready for some campfire time.

Gary

On the bright side I did get my new Tel-Tek outside air temp gauge installed.

Have gotten spoiled, I rely on knowing the air temp.

You should have your butt kicked for burning Southern Yellow Pine!!! that gets premium price per board ft up here.

SYP don't burn it unless it dies in my yard or gets a lighting bolt strike, we got better firewood. They plant SYP in harvesting rows here, we see log trucks with it on them all the time. I'll try to get a pic of a nearby mill and show you a stack of it.

SYP makes for some beautiful looking woodwork inside homes, but the price is out the door high.
