Hey guys,

Been gone from Ram truck world for a few years and am now at the point where I may be able to get back in a used truck.

I am looking for a way to identify the Aisin transmission trucks. Did they have a different rear diff cover on trucks so equipped? Is there a way to have someone look under the truck to tell if it's an Aisin?

I've checked some vin decoders and they don't seem to be any help in specifying the transmission.

Most trucks I find online don't specify the trans or rear end ratio, so trying to get someone to identify it for me has proved challenging. Even trucks for sale at Ram dealers, they don't seem to know what trans it has.

Any help would be appreciated!

Simple way....open the hood, trans dipstick on the left.....68rfe. Dipstick on the right.....Aisin.

Dave :

Copy & paste the VIN in question and replace it with the VIN in the link below.

(The VIN in the link is from my truck---as a reference)

You'll find LOTS of info then.

I haven't looked under a 2013-1016 truck with the 68RFE, but the Aisin ones have the cross member covering the pan bolts at the back end of the pan. If someone could verify that the 68RFE version doesn't have the cross member covering the bolts, this would be and easy confirmation without having to go get the pesky salesman to pop the hood or start his sales nag.
Also has to be a 3500 SRW or DRW to have the Aisin if you didn't already know that.
the Aisin has a drain plug as well where as I believe the 68 RFE doesn't unless they've added it as well on the later models.
If someone with a 2013-2016 with the 68 RFE could confirm these two things that would clear that up.

Yellow handle on right Aisin.

You are correct. The AS69RC does have the transmission drain plug; the 68RFE does not. That's the easiest way to determine the difference of one on the lot---lurking----after hours, from pesky salesman. :-laf

Can someone plug this vin in the above link for me? 3C63RRKL5EG245823

When I click the link, I can't enter any data or cut and past anything in there. It's read-only for me. Must be because I'm on a Mac.

Thanks.

When the post above indicated right, he means as you are looking at the engine. Aisin has the dipstick on the driver's side of the truck; 68RFE dipstick is on the passenger side. Aisin pan has a drain plug and ribbing going front to back. 68 has no drain and cross-hatch ribbing.

Joe, just to clarify for us older model guys and gals that might be looking / lurking to upgrade, are you saying that the on the bottom of the 68 the ribbing is running side to side? Also, where is the drain plug in the Aisin, the actual bottom or on the side of the bottom? My next one will have the Aisin instead of the manual or 68.

That is why I posted a pic so there was no confusion!

It takes 1 second after you have partially opened the hood to see if the truck has an AISIN.CUMINS12V98 pic shows why.
