I will never understand why you can't just pay at the pump for DEF and Fuel at truck stops. It makes absolutely no sense to have to go through the back and forth. I have quit going to my nearest Pilot/Flying J because of the hassle. I now go to a QuickTrip and they seem to understand the need to conduct your business at the pump without going inside.

Walmart's Peak Blue DEF nozzle is always clean. In fact it is a new nozzle everytime I have stopped there. No cruddy crystals in sight! To me less of a chance of putting it in the wrong tank. Snoking

You can with a Good Sam - Pilot/Flying J charge card. You also get a nice discount (6 cents/gallon below cash price, IIRC).

I was using my Good Sams Club as well, just started missing the Pilot, and Flying J truck stops. They seem so packed now with truckers, passenger, and the hobo's,and the break downs too.I thought I would give locals at chance at my hard earn money.I mean the discount is not really earth shattering, what is it 10 percent,or a couple of penny's different. But it does add up when you are running alot of miles. This last trip we logged 6800 miles. So I guess.Diesel is cheap right now.I like the odd stuff they sell, like a Dale Earnheart jacket,or the stuff truckers use on there rigs.I did find a good deal on pole washers for are RV.Now she is all shinny....View attachment 96925

I too use the house brand at WW, always check the date on the bottle and get the freshest one, just dump it in when below half a tank.

A little bit off-topic, but a lesson I had to learn about using the DEF pump at Pilot/Flying J. Do NOT remove the diesel nozzle from the tank if you want to buy DEF on the same transaction. When you hang up the diesel nozzle, that ends the transaction. Leave the diesel nozzle in the tank filler when you finish fueling and then you can use the DEF pump. When finished, hang them both up. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't add DEF after fueling and hanging up the diesel nozzle - that's when a fuel desk attendant educated me.

Rusty I am guessing that's because you are paying at the pumps. When the wife goes in she tells them pump #, dollar amount not to exceed, RV use and Def if it's needed. I pump diesel, hang up then pull out DRF nozzle and fill all on the same transaction.

I too have been fueling and buying DEF at FlyingJ and always pay at the pump and I hang the fuel nozzle up and then proceed to get the DEF. You do have to choose DEF before starting the pump.

Well, at the particular Flying J where I was fueling, my wife had preauthorized $50 and told the fuel desk that we needed DEF (we didn't have our point-of-sale charge cards yet). When I put the diesel nozzle back on the pump at around $42 and pressed the DEF button, the screen displayed something to the effect of "No funds remaining for this transaction." We had to open another transaction at the fuel desk to purchase the DEF. What I posted is what I was told by the attendant - replacing the diesel nozzle closed the preauthorized transaction for $42, and that DEF should be purchased before replacing the diesel nozzle.

In all actuality.....it sounds like the fuel desk attendant is the one that needs educating.

I pre-pay my fuel purchases with cash on my road trips. The Pilot / Flying J's I go to (and that's in a lot of different areas) will ask me the pump number, then, on say a $100 prepay, I'll tell them $80 for #2 and $20 for DEF. I'll pump the #2, hang up the hose, then get a message that says "Begin fueling DEF" or something along that line. I pull forward, go back in and get my change, and the DEF & #2 are itemized on the same receipt.

Very interesting! Will be traveling soon and will see if I have the same issue as you or not. I have fueled both items on same transaction at Loves, FlyJ and Pilot with no issue.

My wife never separates the items and no issue getting both on same transaction.

Yes I think it's cashier related!

I have been a life member of Good Sam for over 20 years. I have their card that lets me charge fuel and other items at Fly J. It also gives me 8 cents off the cash price on diesel. For years now I pull in and swipe card.

I enter control number. It asked me what I want to purchase. Fuel, reefer fuel, DEF etc. I punch in what I want. Pump fuel, hang up hose, pump DEF hang up hose. Thats it, I don't need to go in at all. In reality my wife will run in to look around and I go in and wash my hands. Sometimes I will stop and grab my receipt. Usually they are on a little spin wheel thing and you just look and find it yourself. No talking to anyone if you don't want to. Normally I find everyone at Fly J to be helpfull.

I just want to know who the moron was that designed the DEF tank to be such a pain in the ***** to fill. Also, anyone have an option for locking caps for these, or maybe a way to lock the fuel door?

Heck, we got it easy......my duramax buddy has to open the hood to fill his def tank, the fill pipe is right next to the trans dipstick:-laf plus, there is no tank level gauge like we have........ :-laf:-laf

I also have no issue adding DEF.....only at some fueling station pumps splash back if I'm not paying attention.

Walmart branded DEF is about $ 4.00 cheaper then Peak and made with the same stuff, deionized water and ammonia. the truck stops are even cheaper and they are refilling storage tanks daily. At some places you will need a magnetic ring to put on the nozzle. many truck stops will provide them. The important thing is the date on the box or bottle not who makes it. It is not like gas Urea is all the same probably just a couple of plants make it . I have used the Walmart brand exclusively when not being near a truck stop with no problems.

I use Walmart DEF with no problems. Installed a locking fuel door and superglued a large fender washer to the inside to hold the magnetic diesel cap while fueling.
