So after reading one of the threads.... I ordered the 28 mm 6 pt.... now I read 29 mm, 1 - 1/8".... all sorts of things... can we all get together on what's the right size... I guess I'll find out in an hour... one last thought.... if one of you has purchased the $83 aluminum cap... would you share how easy the cap is to remove when its time..

28mm 6 point is the correct size. 1-1/8 is 28.575mm slightly bigger. 28mm is the best fit.. I would not use 1-1/8 or 29mm as some have.

You are good to go on 28mm, those that report using 1-1/8 or 29mm probably should leave that to themselves, and recommend 28mm. 1-1/8 will work, but why not get the tightest fitting socket possible. For $ 7-8 why not have the right socket. Dealing with plastic you want all the advantage you can get.

So you'd think that after 40 + years of doing this I'd learn and take more time.... so here is what I've learned... that I'm sure some of you have shared but I didn't listen or see it....

Used the 28mm 6 pt socket, and a breaker bar to allow constant torque on the socket to pull it loose...

OK so the mess is now cleaned up.... for those who have never done this.... go buy a new hose for the drain off the secondary filter... one that is longer to get the fuel that runs off, down past all the stuff in the way... use a second piece of hose on the primary filter and make sure you've cracked the filter loose as you drain it.... I made the mistake of opening the water drain and not letting in air.... assumed it was empty and pulled off the "water in the fuel switch" and got a bath... and on my truck the fuel runs off and splatters on the drive shaft, catalytic converter, you know the drill, down my arm....

14 or 15 fuel filter changes on my 2014 with the 1 & 1/8" six-point 1/2" drive deepwell socket......fuel canister lid still looks great.

It same vinyl tube that fits over the frame mounted filter bib, fits inside the OEM engine drain house. 2four!!!! Snoking

No doubt.

I needed a socket I only had an 1-1/8 12 point. So the BEST socket for the job is 28mm. I should of added in my previous post, if you are buying a socket get a 28mm 6 point 1/2 drive.
They can be had at AutoZone for around $7.

" those that report using 1-1/8 or 29mm probably should leave that to themselves" Really?

I agree 28mm is the "correct" size. 1 1/8" 6 point works JUST FINE. That comment is for those that may have a 1 1/8" socket in their tool box. If needing a socket I would recommend the 28mm unless it costs more than the 1 1/8. I have no comment on the 29mm as I have not used one but I have used the 1 1/8" on my 2011 and now my 2015 with no issue.

I used the hose SNOKING gave me the other day. Works on the ID of engine filter drain hose and slips over the drain for the rear filter.

If 1 1/8" is larger than a 28 mm it would simply not fit my lid as my 1 1/8" is very tight. So much so that i have to tap it on a bit. It has never slipped and the top looks new. These filter changes are simple once you do it once and gather the correct catch bins and tools to get in. I have the added pleasure of the Aisin dip stick being in the way and not had any issues.

If you agree whats, the problem. Yes, really, if 28mm is the CORRECT size, then I don't give a rats what size you use. This filter change for some seem to be a bit troublesome, why not give them every chance they can get for success . 28mm

The post above states he would never be able to use the 28mm ,too small he uses a 1-1/8, although it appears he's never used 28mm. My point is now we have guys that 1-1/8 is the only size. We got a vendor that was selling 29mm for this application, and has now switched to selling the correct size 28mm . For the new guy heaven help him on here, we got you guys with 1-1/8, we got the other guys saying 28mm won't work on his truck. Why don't you gentlemen just tell them to get assortment of sizes ,and see what works the best.

Whats a guy to believe, we got the 11quart 28 oz oil guys, the 1-1/8 socket crowd. Then its the ones that drain properly ,slap in 12 quarts, use 28mm, and so on.

We seem to have different size filter caps, as well as dipsticks that read different etc etc.

The ONLY socket of the three that has been reported to possibly not work is the 29MM. Why tell people that they should not say 1 1/8" is fine if you have one in your tool box.

This site is about sharing info that works. The EXACT tool is not always needed.

BTW it's 11qts and 24oz.

Exact tool is not needed, really. You been reading these forums or even what I said, give these guys a chance at success . It is not the easiest task as it is.

Sorry, 24oz. Thats another story all in itself. Its actually laughable :-laf

Half a millimeter on a socket that size is nothing. 1-1/8 is perfectly fine.

Some of us will dwell on overfilling our crank cases by half a quart, you dwell on .5 mm on a large socket. You're as goofy as the rest of us.

You have a point, as we all do ,or is that an opinion :D

My 1 1/8" is a Kobalt from Lowes which i already had. Based on my experience with that brand of tools it could be any size +/- a few mm. I will pick up a 28 to compare. As it is it will stick to the cap and break the bond with my extensions with the ball keepers before it pulls off of the lid.

Have you considered switching to de-caf???? :-laf

I've posted this before.......the underhood canister is OK with 1 & 1/8" *OR* 28mm per the install sheet....as long as it's a SIX POINT.

I have been using 1-1/8" socket, adapter down to 3/8 drive, and a flex head 3/8 long ratchet, no extensions. I put a film of high pressure grease on threads and the o-ring, not so much that any would get inside the canister.
