Snow Chain advice for truck and trailer!

Hi guys I grew up skiing and doing a lot of winter driving but have no experience towing in the snow. Truck is 16cclb 4wd. Trailer is 10k lbs wet 25' travel trailer. What chains do you recommend for 295/65/20 on the truck and standard trailer tires?

Are you planning on all four truck tires or just the rears?

Off highway or deep snow the v-bar are good, however, on hard packed snow/ice, on pavement, I would use the standard twist link.

I have a pair of Olympia Sprints that I use for the rear on mine as they are a little bit heavier built. I have a set of RUD Grips for the front. They are a little lighter in construction but much easier to put on especially when stuck. It was recommended for the diesels to use a heavier chain on the back due to the high torque of our trucks.

I have not used them very often, just like four wheel drive, use them to get out of trouble and then go back to good tires and 2wd. There are times (very few) when we have to chain up out here as a matter of course. When trailering in the the winter I keep chains for the trailer also with me. If I put them on the truck I put them on the trailer also (unless just getting unstuck). I prefer to have brakes on the trailer and want I believe that if the truck needs the extra traction the trailer does also.

Chains aren't supposed to go on 20" wheeels

Check page 626 of your owners manual. There is no approved chain type for 20" wheels.

I contacted Chrysler Customer Care and this was their response:

Hi Mr. XXXXX, This is Carina from Ram Customer Care. Here is the information you requested. On 4x4 2500 model trucks, the use of class “U” snow chains is permitted on the rear wheels only of trucks equipped with LT245/70R17E, LT265/70R18E or LT275/70R18E tires. Do not use tire chains on the rear wheels of 2500 4X4 model trucks equipped with LT285/60R20E tires. There may not be adequate clearance for the chains and you are risking structural or body damage to your vehicle. We do not have any recommendations for alternatives. The customer may want to refer to the internet for alternatives (ex. Spikes Spider, etc.). The dealership may also be able to advise alternatives. Thank you and have a great day!

I am still running the original 17's so my advise won't work for you, thanks brcbruiser.

If you drive right you should never really need chains with our trucks for normal driving, even plowing.

I agree in that if you can opt to not tow in the snow or icy conditions then thats best. But if you do then a V cable for at least one axle of the trailer and some strong chains for the truck due to the strain of towing can damage cables.

We've been using these Pewag square link chains on our work trucks for nearly 20 years. 3/4 and 1-ton trucks, often towing 10k Sno-Cats while chained up. NEVER had one break.
