My 95 12 valve is out of service sadly, I have been reading about fuel system issues again. At 1500 rpm the engine blows black then white smoke and dies. I can barely run 45 mph with light throttle. I can get a quick burst of throttle with 20 psi of boost before it drops to 500 rpm and stalls.
I already have replaced the fire wall fuel lines, the hose on the heater strainer thing, heater element eliminated, new seal and strainer. Lift pump started leaking last year and its still fairly new. I haven't checked the fuel pressure, but the lift pump is a new Cummins part. Engine oil shows no signs of water and its at normal levels, no external leaks I can find around the head. Turbo spins freely, the truck doesn't use much engine oil. Just leaks slowly around the oil pan seal, I replaced the valve cover seals. The motor is fairly dry with only 94,000 miles, its my fire wood and boat towing rig. I occasionally pull an RV or heavy utility trailer with it, so low miles.
My fuel tank sending unit is original along with the lines/hoses near the tank. My fuel gauge sometimes reads empty, but it started working again a couple months ago. Since the engine will push 20 psi briefly then stall, no noticeable oil use and will idle and then at 1500 stumbles, maybe its sucking air bad? No drips on the ground though. I'm thinking it way be a rotten fuel supply line under the bed or the sending unit? Does that sound logical?
A few months ago I fixed a boost leak, replaced the intake horn gasket and fixed some intercooler rubber elbow leaks. I'm still running the BD intercooler hose kit. The only thing I can think of is the fuel lines, it idles smooth, starts quick. Once you rev the engine it won't stay running. I can save it by pumping the throttle sometimes. But, once it stumbles it usually dies and then restarts easily blowing black then white smoke. Fuel filter looks clean, 2,000 miles are on it. Filter was changed over the summer and I don't see anything odd inside. No foam, just clean fuel. I was expecting to see aerated fuel maybe?
Possibles are:
Fuel supply lines sucking air under throttle?
Injectors?
Lift Pump?
Injector Pump?
Timing is original, never touched so maybe an issue there?
Thoughts/Advice? Appreciate some feedback.
I guess I'll get some help and pull the camper shell and bed off first and look at the fuel lines. Run the truck off a separate fuel source and see. I need to pull the tank sending unit anyway. Engine sounds normal, it just dies under throttle when it loads up heavy. I can't get it to go over 20 psi, my usual boost is around 35 psi pulling hard to just about 40 psi when I stomp it.
