FCA reimbursed for non-failed recalled water pump.

I replaced my recalled water pump with a Gates at an independent shop and submitted a reimbursement request to FCA online. I received a check for the labor and coolant from FCA in one week. No payment for the Gates, but I am still a happy camper!

I should have added to my original post that FCA called me about 3 minutes after I filed the online reimbursement request and the customer service woman was very pleasant. She only asked me why I did not replace the pump with a MOPAR part. I told her that the new part was not available. She did not ask me if the OEM pump had failed or why I did not take the truck to the dealer. The shop that replaced the pump simply stated on the invoice I submitted it was replaced at my request. This suggests that FCA is glad to get the liability of a potential failure off their books. Whatever the reason, the Gates pump only coste me $58 out of pocket while FCA reimbursed me $300 for labor and coolant. Cheap insurance IMHO.

So FCA doesn't reimburse gates parts or ACDelco parts? Only labor and mopar parts?

I wouldn’t expect any vehicle manufacturer to reimburse an owner that installs an aftermarket part on a recall campaign. The manufacturer is legally responsible under a recall to repair a defect. They can’t be expected to take on a financial obligation on parts they don’t have any control over.

IMO, I would be surprised if FCA will warranty coolant related engine damaged caused by a failed self installed aftermarket pump.

We have a fleet of 4500 chassis ambulances affected by this recall-one of which failed during an emergency response- no warning- as mentioned above- instant failure- with small fire as well!

I just checked my (replaced at 40,000 miles) water pump. No vent hole. I now have about 67,000 on the truck. The pump housing is uniformly and heavily coated with surface rust. Nothing else in the vicinity is rusting. It may be my imagination but occasionally when I stop I think I smell coolant. Nothing on the ground yet, though. I am concerned that the pump is getting hot and that is what has accelerated the rust. Is that a reasonable concern? The pictures in the video earlier in this thread of installed pumps showed pumps that looked a lot better than mine.

My previous pump failed on startup after I had just towed 9000# at 65 mph for about 5 hours. I don't want this one to fail while I'm driving.

Consider the source of " no warning". I've watched rescue drivers head off on flat tires on multiple occasions. Open doors with audible warnings, " I didn't see/ hear that". A growling water pump doesn't even register with 95% of the population.

What exactly is burning when this happens?

The scope of any potential fire is apparently wide. A company spokesman said that "in accordance with (the) regulatory definition, which includes everything from a burning odor to open flame, we are aware of a small number of such incidents. Of these, a smaller number involved damage – none of which extended beyond the immediate area of the water pump."

Hey Guys, much different subject, but, what would any of you guys expect to get fuel-wise towing a 12K GVW trailer, all over, with your different rigs.. Just wondering.. Thanks fort your replys Olde Bob 18Dodger18

Why would a dealer have the approved replacement pump when FCA hasn't even released the inspection and remedy information?

This is my first Ram vehicle, but I guess I don't know if they release the specifics to the public? Or just release the specifics to the dealer?

Mine says "Inspect Water pump & replace if necessary". But i imagine they give much more detailed remedy instructions to their dealers. I even expect a few to get a new serp belt if determined that it might have less than 1-2 years life left on it. Depending on how they want to cover their behinds.

I think the only inspection by the dealer will be to make sure your water pump is the correct Concentric pump. I believe that all the evidence indicates they will replace the Concentric pump in the recall regardless of its condition upon inspection. There is no way they can predict when the pump will fail. They want the pump out so they do not get sued for injury or loss of life. Otherwise FCA would never have reimbursed me for replacing my functioning pump at an independent shop.

I just completed a trip from MN to AZ, almost 2000 miles. Hard not to think about the water pump out in the middle of nowhere in West Texas. Everything worked fine, I am carrying a spare pump but don't want to replace one that is still working OK.

Several times while getting fuel I did use my Fluke Temperature Gun to check the pump temperature. The highest reading I got was 180 degrees.

I guess all the people like me who replaced their wp's with one that is being recalled, and had it fail, have no recourse.

I'd submit your invoice on the pump you've replaced there is a chance you'll get reimbursed. My Alt burned up last year a month before the recall notice came out and 4 months before Good Known replacement parts were available. I sentin my invoice and got a check back a few months later with a note saying sorry for the inconvenience.
