Hello in need of som help I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9 cummins 24 valve has 400 tho on it it’s a great truck but ever since I owned it 2 years now always seemed like it has a lack of power like somethings holding it back I did the hole top end over had it resurfaced New gaskets and new stock Bosch Injectiers and put a fass ddrp on it and tps sensor and ever rebuilds the vacuum pump and I regularly Change my oil and fuel filter transmission seems good no slipping and turbo has no shaft play just did not know if anyone had a idea they could throw out there and I’m not getting any codes please and thank you

Remove the cover on the APPS, then have someone hold the throttle pedal to the floor and check if the APPS moves farther by hand. Some second gens are noted for problems with the throttle cable being to long or stretched. The fix is to put split sinkers on the cable at the top of the throttle pedal.

Have not trued that thank you lol if I may ask what are split sinkers

How much boost is the turbo making, EGTs and what is the fuel pressure? Every 2nd gen should have gauges for fuel pressure, EGT and Boost.

Has the VP44 ever been replaced and maybe installed out of time. Again boost and EGTs will tell a story.

Ya I have not put any gauges in yet I need to look in to doing them thank you

well the last owner changed the vp 44 our at 200 tho and he gave the paper work for it but good point how do I how about getting it in the right set time

And on high way can seem to go over 70 seems to be it and it takes a little to get up to speed feels like I press the peddle and I I have some power till I reach half peddle and any peddle after that to the floor nothing unles I push completely to the floor then it screems but does not move very fast if you know what I’m trying to say

There were some posts a while back where people replaced the VP and had less power than before. I never heard or read that there was ever a solution.

Is it an auto transmission or manual. Do RPMs increase without the speed responding? Torque converter or clutch slipping?

If you just lift up in the throttle pedal, how far does it lift? Over an inch is a problem. SnoKing

It is a auto

Has the transmission ever been rebuilt with a new torque converter? There is a normal 200-300 RPM's between the torque converter being lock and unlocked. Going through the gears at modest throttle it just seem like there are more than 3 shifts, as the torque converter locking appears like a shift.

Motor screaming and not going much of anywhere sounds like torque converter slipping. Have you sniffed the transmission fuild for a burnt smell?

Really need gauges to see what's going on. Boost, fuel pressure, EGT and trans temp. Otherwise with no codes your just fishing around trying to stumble across the problem.

DJ, when you rebuilt the top end did you / mechanic have a look at the cylinder walls for scuffing etc? If it's not the TPS cable I would be suspicious of a compression issue. One other thing; have you checked for excessive blow-by? It's easy enough to do a cursory test.
