Friends,

I finally exceeded the limits of my prosthetic ankle. A friend's Dad passed away, so we hitched up the 20' enclosed car hauler to the 5500 and headed from San Antonio TX to a little town North of Little Rock AK to move his Mom to TX. Lifting more than I should and stepping wrong off a step, I tore the polyurethane joint in my prosthetic ankle. Only skin, muscle, ligaments, and tendons are holding my foot onto my leg.

Ortho surgeon, who implanted the ankle in 2013, determined it was torn this past week. Have a CT scan on the 3rd of April to see if the bone or titanium is damaged, although I doubt the titanium is bad. If bone and metal is good, he can perform surgery to replace the polyurethane with an improved version of it. If bone and/or metal is bad, he may have to remove the prosthetic ankle and fuse my foot. I'm praying it's good.

Hope not too long to wait for surgery... I have to keep my ankle/foot immobilized in an air cast and not allowed to put weight on it. It's pretty painful. Can't complain though, while I was at Brook Army Med Center, saw a poor Vet in his 20s, burned most of his body and missing a hand. Lots of brothers and sisters like this who need our help and prayers

So, my activities are cut way back. I'm not taking pain meds so I can still drive, but not doing too much else. Days are a little bit long sitting and laying around. I'm good for a few hours. Got some great friends and family coming over to help. I consider y'all my extended friends in the TDR. I got rid of my 2002 Ram 3500 with 6spd manual because I could no longer operate the clutch.

Well, I hope the news is good and I come out of this walking straight and level. if I get a new joint, I'm going to be way more careful in what I do.

I'll post updates as they become available. Thanks for your prayers in getting through this.

Cheers, Ron

Wow! I hate to hear things like that. What really sucks is it happened while you were helping someone out. Hopefully the prognosis will be a good one and thank you for your service.

Sorry to hear that Ron, God speed and best wishes it all goes well. I can kind of relate, the Wife broke her ankle Feb 17th our 46th anniversary so she has been laid up. On her second cast now and I have been playing Joe mechanic and Molly maid. Makes for a very busy days.

Thanks friends. My friend I helped move is a retired Military Vet and so was his Dad. His Mom was just diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer's before his Dad passed and he's having a really tough time.

Thanks again, Ron

Good men doing good deeds won't go unnoticed when it really counts. Here's to a complete recovery Ron.
God bless you and your friends and family.

Yes sir. My MIL broke the bone her hip replacement was attached to last August and almost didn't survive. We cancelled our Fall trip out East to be there for her. She pulled through great, but had to put her in nursing home. She's loving it.

Our next scheduled trip out is Memorial Day, so my wife asked me if we need to cancel. I told her not yet. It could actually be months before my surgery. Same over at the VA, but they don't do prosthetic ankles, or didn't when I had mine done.

Thanks again for your support. I'm praying every day for my friend and his Mom.

wishing you the best...I have a knee that will need some work soon...not looking forward to it.
Get well soon!

Seems having an ankle, knee, or hip is part of a club these days. Good luck with your knee and be sure to do what the doc says.

Wow dawg, so sorry to hear about this, but at least you got caught doing something good.
On the plus side, for a prosthetic (is this considered a replacement, like a knee or hip?) it sounds like you were going about business and were able to push its limits!
My MIL has a ankle replacement approx 10 years now, and while she’s not real active, it’s been impressive so far.

I do to much on ladders and lifting. About 5 months ago, I really ramped up exercising on my spin bike. I'm in physical therapy for my right shoulder, so I asked the doc there about what other things I'm doing wrong with my ankle . He told me to stop spinning, riding bike as applying too much torque on my ankle. I was also weight lifting standing, I can only do it sitting or lying on my back. None of this was ever mentioned when I had the ankle done, really only no running, jumping, mostly low impact.

I guess now, I'm going to be changing how I do a lot of things.

Thanks, Ron

Here’s to high tech medicine. If there’s an improved or upgraded part available it means you’re not the first to have a problem with the original. I hope things go well for you.
