Any comments on the best way to "build" a 5th Wheel hitch? I see two options for the 8' Long Bed and kind of answered my own question in putting this info all in one place. Perhaps there is a 3rd MOPAR option?

Looks like a 20K will be big enough to meet the capacity of the pickup. 2018 model year 8' long bed 4x4 SRW if it matters.

I am looking at two options:

A combo of 82213822 20K Hitch, 82213667 "Picture Frame", and 82213824 Legs. (This appears to be the way you build a Short Bed slider hitch with the 82213823 Glider vs. 82213824 Legs.)

Curt/RAM 5er hitches are Made in China!!!

They are hard to unhitch if truck and RV are on opposite planes/twisted.

They are known to cause chucking as the heads pivot point is several inches below the kingpin connection.

Simply look atrocious the B&W hitches they put Curt to shame and are US Made. Simple solid NO QUESTION if you are hitched.

I agree 110% on the RVK3600.

I don’t have a 5er but needed a hitch to move dad’s. I only wanted to buy one hitch and be done in case I ever get a 5er. After a little research it was a very easy choice.

I found a lightly, if at all, used one for just over 1/2 price.

Avoid the mopar/Curt. Like said it's made in China. I also read and head the hitch can be a pain to unlatch and suck.
Gonna spend the money, might as well get something better. I went for the B&W hitch as well. Extremely well made. I previously had a Reese signature/elite hitch and didn't care for how the side to side pivot was done. Mine had worn a lot. No easy or good way to lube it. So it popped and banged and snapped all the time.

Always get good information on here. I never gave it a second thought that a MOPAR hitch would be Made in China. For the "cost" being the same for Made In USA...

Friends,

Two of my friends bought 2018 Ram 3500 4X4 trucks with Max Tow. Both took my advice about using BW Companion setups. I have the same one bought through the dealer on my 2017 5500, that I bought/installed through the Ram dealer in 2009 on my 2009 Ram 4500. Rock Solid!

just adding to the BW band wagon.

Cheers,

Ron

I have and like the B&W. I have the gooseneck and Companion fifth-wheel setup, good for 20k pounds. The bed is clean when the companion is removed and the gooseneck ball is inverted, an easy process.

B&W fanboys!
Just kidding, I had B&W on my old truck. I would get B&W for any application except for a slider hitch and thats only because they dont make an auto slide hitch, wish they did.

they dont make a slider, but they do make one that has 5th wheel set back from the gooseneck mount. Might not work for you but friend of mine used with his 6'.4" bed.

correction, They do have a slider.

  • A brother to the Companion, the Companion Slider for Ram Pucks uses the same great coupler but with a base designed to utilize the Ram factory hitch platform. Like every hitch in our Companion series, it offers a smooth ride and easy hook-up and removal for a level bed—all without sacrificing sturdiness, reliability, or towing power.

If you are looking for an Auto Slider checkout the Demco Autoslide hitch. I purchased one last year in the early spring to replace my Reese manual sliding hitch after 10 years of use.

What I like about this auto slider hitch is depending on the pin box you do not need a capture plate like other auto sliding hitches require. The jaw is tight and with the TrailAir pin pox there is no chucking or banging as you tow. If you have the MorRyde style pin box or a derivative of the MorRyde you will need a locking plate.

The hitch is adaptable to the Ram puck system, under bed or above bed mounting using industry standard rails for above bed.

NICE!!! Welcome to the B&W "HeavyWeightFanBoyClub"

Here is a response from Curt asking where their 5er hitches are made.

Good morning,

The 5th wheel hitches are mad in China.

Thank you,
Steve

A simple VISUAL comparison will make most decide on the B&W.

B&W's slider may be a manual but I am sure it works well as do all their products.

Optional padlock kit? Keeping things from coming loose? Are the B&W's that popular that they walk off on their own?

Gave it it's first workout this past weekend... It does cushion the bumps from the 5th wheel trailer somewhat. Night and day easy button load/unload over the cranky U-Haul hitch I have in the other truck.

Any thoughts on the lube plate B&W offers?

I did not know they offer a plate. If it's 1/8" thick get it. I have Hensleys 1/8" plate. Since the B&W jaws are so thick it's easier to see when the load is off with the thinner plate.

IMHO the most important lock is for the handle as there are A-Holes out there that will pull the handle and then the results may not be so good.

Yes there have been B&W hitches removed from the bed of peoples trucks. Really simple turn 4 handles lift and carry away.
