Re torque converters, I’ll add a data point for my experience with Goerend: all good. I’m sure there are other good products out there, but I haven’t run them.
My 2006 was new to me in Jan 2017. I did an oil analysis on the transmission fluid as part of my pre purchase checks, when it came back with high iron, I was concerned, but not enough to walk away. In March 2017, the TC sprag failed (very common, but not catastrophic) and I ended up going with a Goerend triple disk TC, with a stall speed most like stock for a variety of reasons. I ended up having my transmission rebuilt with a full rebuild kit, adding billet input shaft, flex-plate and a custom valve body. I kept all the old parts, and probably had easily 50% of the friction life remaining, with no trouble areas found, but it is good to know the transmission is a known quantity. Driveability with this triple disk TC and custom VB is excellent; shifts are firm, but reasonable. I accelerate like a grandma, but run fairly fast on the interstate, tow occasionally, and most of my trips are hour commutes to/from the airport. When I need to tow, haul hay, or travel, this combination works for me.
