Buying a Ford over a weld. HMMMMM
Over product support. I have had several issues that are intermittent and no fix even with pictures to support the faults, radio ghosting, service electronic brake with no trailer attached, transfer case shifting into natural. BS on recalls the tail gate recall in out for parts dealers says 4-6 month, the steering fix. surging transmission.

You think the others are better maybe look into Ford's denial of warranty on the CP4.

I just save up my recalls and get em dun at one time. Kinda fun like clipping grocery store COOPINS.

I got a call a week or so ago from FCA trying to schedule my drag link recalled. I said I did not want it welded. She said she would check on that and get back to me. Just now they called again to schedule it. I again said I did not want it welded. She said they would send the replacement drag link to a dealer to be installed. I told her where I wanted to have the recall done and she said the dealer will call when the part arrives. We will see!

I feel that loctiting it while clocking the ends correctly and monitoring it along with filing a complaint on safercar.gov stating that welding an important adjustment that effects the centering of the steering wheel was not an acceptable solution got someones attention at safercar and FCA.

I will update this development if the dealer calls that they have the new part to install.

So in summary, just maybe I out waited them with a good amount of blue loctite. SnoKing

Strange, I still haven't taken mine in (mostly out of forgetfulness), but nobody has contacted me and I haven't received anything in the mail for quite a few months.

I get calls monthly or so...

Thinking about going the aftermarket route and submitting the receipt for reimbursement, but I'll try your method at their next call @SnoKing

Absolutely agree that welding it is not an appropriate repair. Changed my front springs last year, no surprise that the steering wheel was off after that, and it was easy for me to adjust immediately in my shop.

James,

Sorry to get off topic. But i saw your Kanati initial impressions in TDR issue 107 and looked for more info at roadtraveler.net. Not seeing it on your road traveler.net website.

Not sure they are available yet, but definable interested in reviewing a set of Kanati Armor Hogs if the opportunity presents itself.

The column I just submitted for the next TDR includes a project evaluating 18 versus 20 inch tires/wheels as they relate to overall suspension performance.

Two weeks ago I mounted a new set of Dick Cepek Fun Country tires... I posted something on Instagram but still need to make videos and such for my website and YouTube.

Thanks,

James

Well I got a little run around on the phone today, so I just ordered the replacement part. I'll then submit the $137.50 for reimbursement, which I am sure is less than the dealership will charge FCA for the inspect/weld BS.

I am not sure if the nut is needed or not, but I ordered it too based on the above post. There are 2 in use, but I only ordered 1. I can't imagine them both being bad at 16K miles... and they don't appear to be 1 time use.

68338342AD Steering Drag Link$120.18
86505623AA Hex Lock Nut$4.91

68338342AB also appears to have been replaced by 68338342AD, which lists 15-20 Ram 3500's as the application.

68338342AD wasn't in stock and not back orderable, 68338342AB was in stock and I have tracking information.

I would encourage everyone to call the recall hot line and tell them this is BS. I have been working it all day. I did not pay 75K of good money on piss poor product support. the y can have this one back and my 2012 JKU. i'm about ready to buy a Ford if this keeps up. This at best a mass confusion from all dealerships and even RAM HQ. I was led to believe this was an interim fix but then they guy on the phone tried top sell me that the NHSTA agreed to this a final fix. we shall see as he said he had to do more research and needed 48 hours.

At least my welded up Rams run.........my Ford 6.7 Powerstroke was on it's 3rd turbo and 2nd engine in 10756 miles. Good luck with your blue oval.

After 1 tire replaced for 'radial pull' and 3 alignments under warranty I found out the old parts are still available to do a dealer alignment.

68111302AA Adjuster Drag Link

Hmmm... The 2WD versions appear to also have this problem, but, were not recalled.

FCA faces NHTSA investigation into Ram 2500 steering recall

The agency is apparently not satisfied with FCA's failure to determine a root cause.

This is a rather large recall for so few issues. I don't really think it was necessary, and the fix is worse than problem.. hence my order of the OE upgraded part... I just want them to stop calling me and mark it complete.

Both nuts would have to come loose and substantial unthreading of the adjuster to cause a loss of control, and if someone doesn't notice their steering wheel starting to move relative to straight then there are more issues between the steering wheel and the seat than between the steering wheel and the tires.

Wait you mean to tell me that the steering wheel should return to the same location after a turn? Yea I can see some of my School boy crew saying that... lol
This is scary. The recall that is. The fact that they were even allowed to “tack wield” as a fix really has my head spinning. It’s not right. When the track bar mounting brackets were ripping off the frame a few years back someone should have said enough we cannot allow this crap to keep coming out of our factory’s. One accident. Doesn’t have to result in a death. One is too many. Like I have written on here in the past RAM really needs to step it up Quality wise if they expect me to buy another truck from them. And I’m not talking about the quality of the interior or the 12” tv on the dash. I’m talking about the things that really matter. Not the flash or who has the most power. I want a truck that works and keeps working well after the warranty is up. Like the 1989 and the 2005 that I use to own. And not risk killing someone in the process.

I still think someone was not clocking the ends correctly, so they self loosened themselves, when turning back and forth. I found the far side nut loose and it would turn with one finger pressed against in. I clocked the ends the same direction and applied a liberal amount of blue Loctite and re-tightened the nut the best I could with the tools I had available. Now a year+ later it is still in place with markings still lined up.
