Having a few issues downloading the pictures. The "cherry picker" and engine stand I am using were both built by my friend. The air over hydraulics on the crane came from a Cab Over truck and sure makes it a lot easier than pumping by hand.

When I pulled the head off there were no surprises

this time.

Got a bit more done on the replacement engine . It is now striped down to a bare short block with every thing removed except the crank, rods, and pistons. This and the cylinder head is all I will be using from the Dodge. Al the other parts will be transferred over from the original engine. I have some time off work right now so I plan on going out there and doing some more work. I have all the gaskets I need now. Lots of cleaning to do. The engine will be painted Cummins Beige as that's what it would have been when the MH was new. More pictures to follow of course.

BTW. Even with the oil drained from the pan NEVER rotate the engine upside down on a stand with the pan still on. Remove it first as there is still a good inch of ugly black stuff left in the bottom of the pan, and no I didn't learn the hard way. I knew better.

Spent time cleaning and sorting out parts the last few days. So why do I have 12 chopstick and some rubber bands? You stuff them down the holes where the push rods were and stick the bottom end into the tappets, pull each one up slightly and hold each pair together with an elastic band. Once you have them all in the up position you can now pull the camshaft out. Or you can turn the block upside down and just pull the cam out then reach down and remove the tappets one at a time. I still have the block in the coach and the replacement on the stand so I did one each way.

Here is what the 6 pistons I pulled form the old engine look like. The rod bearings looked normal for wear but the engine got real hot and that's what killed it. ALWAYS maintain your cooling system.

You're coming long real good, still have more cleaning to do, yes that for sure cooling system is real important as you have discovered will deathly will fry the motor.:(

I got to spend some time with "Rex" recently and got some more work done on the engine. This is what the front gear train of a 5.9 looks like with the cover off. The small gear in the bottom center is the crankshaft. The 2 to the left is the lube pump. The big one just to the upper right of the crank is the Camshaft. To the right of it is the accessory drive, in this case it is an air compressor. On a 2002 or older Dodge it would be the vacuum pump. The big one at the top is the fuel injection pump. The rusty hole on the left side is where the water pump goes.

This is a cylinder head bolt gauge. You put the bolt in the appropriate slot and if it fits it is OK. If it doesn't fit then it is too long and has "stretched" and needs to be replaced. It works for "B" and "C" engines. The 12 valve B has 3 different length of bolts. I have the head on now. I still need to mount the fuel injection pump and the air compressor and the I can put the front gear cover back on. Then I can put the injectors in, install the injector lines and... and ... Still lots to do. I do hope to have it running sometime this summer.

Be sure to tab the dowel pin almost dead center in this picture. It is not good when they fall out and go thru the gears.

Shadrach just take your time with mounting the injection pump sometimes getting the gear line up can be a bear, what work you have done is real good, several times I had problems with the dam injection pump good luck:cool:.

If he mounts it before installing the front cover it would be easy to see "things"!

The picture I posted if of the original engine as I was tearing it apart. I put a dowel pin tab put on the replacement engine. The engine will be almost complete before it goes in to the coach as it is so much easier to work on right now.

This project is slow going. I did take last week off and went to the mountains with the trailer by myself for some peace and quiet. I know of a remote campsite where there was hardly anyone around. Did some hiking, took some photos and had some naps. AHHH!

Finally got the replacement engine back together. So much to do so little time. I had to wait for a friend who know lots about setting the timing on B engines to get back from holidays before I could do the last on the assembly. I am grateful for help from the "experts" but it does take time. So in the meantime I went thru the outside storage compartments and cleaned them all out by sorting and chucking stuff. I also vacuumed them all out. I wouldn't be able to do this job without help from several friends in the industry. I can do the grunt labour but sometimes you need a second hand and advice.

It sure was nice to have access to the proper tools to set the valves. I am working in the corner of my friends shop and trying to not get in his way. I painted the engine Cummins Beige as that is what it would have been painted when it was built back in 1994. I will give it one last coat before it goes into it's new home. The turbo will go on after it is installed. That probably won't happen until early Sept. In the mean time I have lots of cupboards inside to go thru and clean out.
