Applying Crazy Seal Protective Coating to My RV Roof

I have a 2015 Mobile Suites 5tth wheel with EPDM rubber roof that I'm going to apply Crazy Seal roof protective coating to. EPDM rubber rooves are durable and can easily last more than 10 years with regular cleaning and treating at least each year. The downside is they are vulnerable to tears and punctures, which mine has three such puncture repairs.

I wanted to get something that is more durable and less or no maintenance. My RV weighs 21Klbs, axles are right on there 8KLb ratings, so adding weight was major concern, especially adding it on the roof. I checked the fiberglass ones... they cost around $8K, require removing everything off the roof, and add 800+ lbs. All negatives to me. So next on my search was something durable, cost effective, and relatively less weight. My search came up with Crazy Seal, about $1,200, just requires cleaning, masking off roof components, and rolling on two coats. After a few weeks of studying alternatives, I decided to do it.

So I'm posting each step as I do them. First, I removed three AC covers, two Fantastic Fan vent covers, the marine 360° TV/radio antenna, and satellite dish. I did this in the shop and am pulling RV out in order to pressure wash and lightly scrub roof to remove roof protectant and dirt. Here's pics so far:

I'm moving RV outside now, block tires, level, and preposition electric pressure washer, bucket, basic non degreaser dish soap. Gonna do it early before the hot sun comes around.

I have been debating of which to use. The one your doing which is clean and apply or another which is a catalyst mix. The catalyst mix may and is suggested to use their primer also so the catalyst is a lot bigger job. If I remember right the crazy is a 50 year guarantee. The catalyst is like a 15-20. Both will probably be after I am gone.

I completed roof pressure washing and cleaning with Crazy Cleaner. Pretty whooped after 4 hours topside. I worked about 10 feet at a time, stepping like Tim Conway, baby steps. The roof is VERY slippery with Crazy Cleaner, dont work near the edge. Nice extension brush set to 8 ft worked well cleaning the roof.

Just for everyone's info, I removed AC covers to clean AC units... I sprayed them clean about 3 to 4 ft back... you don't want high pressure in them.

So, I'm done today... rest and reconstitution til tomorrow, where I will wash the body of the RV. Then back it into the shop, and use paint thinner dampened cloth to wipe clean the sealant around all the roof hardware and taping them up.

PERSONALLY I would stick to cleaning the roof annually. NO WAY would I add a coating to a roof that is perfectly fine. It's just another item to take care of. As for durability the fiberglass roof is the next step!

OH yea I am at 24k and well over my 8k axle rating but under tire rating. MORryde checked the spec on the "Springs" and they were well within spec at my weight.

I am watching this also. I have a 2015 Big Horn with roof issues. On utube there are many videos about installing a new roof or putting a coating on an existing roof. Good Luck and be safe on that tall roof.

Always love reading 50 year guarantee on an RV. Like being 71 a 10 year guarantee is just great !

I'm back on the roof doing sealant inspection and cleaning. None cracked, so wiping down with paint thinner to get grime off. Also, I brought an old blanket to lie on to keep oily sweat off the clean roof. I take shoes off too.

In case you're wondering, I kept vent housing brackets on the Crazy Seal folks called for removing... I'm able to clean and apply new roof covering underneath them. Coming down for a breather and then starting to cut in all the components on the roof and do the rain gutter seams today and maybe tomorrow. I'm being real safe, just fused ankle, knees, back, neck, and shoulder. Old injuries and old man arthritis just part of life.

Just don't test gravity up there, new camper would be cheaper.

I have roof vents on my AS and the caulking self leveling sealant was showing its age. A bit of searching and I decided to try the thick foil roof repair tape. It's pretty wide and tough stuff. Looks like I did four strips and then went over each corner with a corner piece.

It does hurt having roll around scaffolding to do this as well.

Well, resting in the AC and looking to do all the cutting in tomorrow and rolling basecoat either tomorrow or Sunday.

I start at 8 and work to 12 or 1 and that's about the limit of my stamina. I think this project could be done by me 20 years ago in two days, but now it looks to be 5 day project. I get good airflow from all my fans and its dropped down into the 90s. I did give starting at 8PM, but my clock is pretty locked in. In the old days, 12 to 18 hours a day were easy peasie.

It's working and I'm reconstituting pretty good.

As always appreciate yours and others thoughtful suggestions. I'm good.

Yeah, I am the same. But darn it really sounded good. Sun comes up, Dave gets up (sometimes), Sun goes down Dave goes down.

I can force myself to work through the night. SAR callouts were almost always in the middle of the night. The problem is then I feel hungover, and it takes a couple days to recover. I have given up pushing it. I start early and work a few hours, and that's it. If I start pushing I end up making mistakes.

Reading the instructions, the Crazy products take as little as 4 hours, but preferred 12 hours to dry. Its ideal to tie everything in while still wet, so I need to do the sides not more than an hour a side, then the front and rear caps, 30 minutes each, and paint 3 to 6 inch out from each of the ACs, the antenna, and the vents, about an hour. So 4 hours to do lead work before rolling on base coat, estimated an hour. Going to get up early, be on the roof by 6 and try to pull all this together. I think I Can handle it.
