the op is the only one saying its horrible. my 2017 6.4 supposedly has mds but ill be damned if you can tell when its on or off. he should probly take himself back over to the ford forums and call it a day

Don't know why it would be any different, but I'm willing to bet it was not a crew cab long bed 4x4. Outside of that, different transmission. My boss's 07 ram is totally seamless MDS.

Mine was enough that people who didn't know cars would comment "what's that?" When it would engage in my truck.

you sound like that same twit on the ram site talking crap. oh my steering wheel clicked. i cant find the oil. uncle tony the moron says my cam is crap. blah blah.

you get to the ford site so excited about that bad ass new ford

now your running back to the ram sites . must of lost all confidence in the ferd i suppose. or was it the 99% chance youll end up with death woble and other front end problems that scared you away ?

No. Just comparing two trucks? But I can tell you're a dick.

listen here scooter. im sick of seeing your lame story on every forum. steering wheel clicks, cant find oil, mds is annoying, lifters are crap. i dont know what to tell you about the steering wheel. stuff breaks, go get it fixed. the oil, every dealer in the usa has no less than 100qts on hand everyday. $77. you probly drive by a dealer three times a day. for 3yrs i didnt know my truck had mds, thats how much i noticed it. then to put the cherry on the top, you went and watched uncle tonys lifter video. that guy doesnt know his head from his ass. last i heard you dumped that piece of crap ram and had a new shiny ford on order but here you are back on the ram sites again

Listen here boot licker, cry me a river. Just because your previous generation ram didn't do it means N O T H I N G. Got that?

You need to get a life.

Funny how you just do some minute research about cam/lifter failure and it's all over, in real life shops and people, and the internet.

And last you heard? Last you heard. What am I the talk of the town? Or are you just following my every move?

I feel sorry for a guy who's so offended by someone having a bad experience with a brand that they have to insult there way through. Again, get a life loser.

more like i cant get away from you. your same blabbering thread is on a minimum of three forums, maybe five or six forums truth be know. every where i go i have to hear about your clicking steering wheel and how you couldnt find oil, even though every dealer has hundreds of qaurts on hand daily. sorry mods but im sure you understand

Fender and jerry.
Both of you are newbie, non TDR subscribers. Honestly I too do not want to hear your bickering and this forum is old enough to legally drink. I’ve been around for all of it.
I’ve never seen it be lowered to a sophomoric level such as this.
I think I’m speaking for many of the other members here when I say shape up or ship OUT!
Nobody cares what’s happened on the other forums or between you two.

Minimum of 3 forums? Please name them.

Buddy, I'm here because I think the Ram is a very attractive truck, and attractively priced. I've ruled out the hemi for the reasons discussed. I'm fairly certain I haven't mentioned the clicking steering wheel on this forum until now, that was an issue ram attempted to fix and could not after the 4 months it was an issue, I happened to sell for the other reasons.

I came here purely to discuss cummins rams and get a handle on their inherent issues with the latest generation engines from 2019. Yes they made changes, read about it from cummins themselves. Concerned with the CP4.

As the Ford is still on order with no money down or commitment, and will not be available for some months, I am weighing my options, considering the very similar price.

You do not need to read my threads. That's your choice.

It's my right to discuss my factual experience with owning a 2019 ram crew cab 4x4 long bed 6.4 hemi with the 8 speed trans.

I'm not driving all the way out to a dealership 40 minutes away to pick up oil. Napa and autozone did not carry the specific oil required from penzoil or the recently accepted valvoline. That's an unnecessary hassle to hunt for "special" oil.

If you want to get offended because of my factual account with owning that new ram, which you did not own, nor own the same year model with new transmission AND an MDS system designed to engage more often (info directly from chrysler themselves), that is YOUR problem. Not mine!

Go ahead and crucify me for it.

Thanks TDRAdmin4 for speaking up,

@Fender1325

So......what oil (brand and weight) do / did you run in your problematic 6.4L?
The truck is sold. When I checked it at 4200 miles it was below the "add oil" line which equated to 2 quarts low.

I went to my local napa who has a good older parts guy and asked him what viscosity and filter, and bought the only full synthetic oil in that viscosity (I forget off the top of my head now, 5w40?) Which was mobil 1.

After changing I posted how it was low and changed it with mobil 1, to which I was informed penzoil ultra platinum was the only acceptable oil (at the time). Looked around over the next couple weeks. Asked a buddy who is a professional oil additive tester to which he said penzoil ultra platinum is a good oil but mobil 1 was superior, and they probably just didn't pay FCA to have that special rating. Probably a month or two later I sold the truck anyway.

Interesting, not long ago they wanted to have 5W-20 fully synth for that Engine.
And stated in the manual to never never never use an oil with a heavier weight because it will interfere with the MDS.
(For non-MDS engines the 5W-30 was recommended)

*and if I browse through Google results I find quite many that had lifter noise, tappeds and NVH in general when switching to heavier weight Oils.

***I have NO clue why Ram specifies two totally different oil types for basically the same engine. 5W20 vs 0W40, 5.7 vs 6.4

It’s not unusual to raise the viscosity to meet a heavier duty cycle an engine works. Now this runs against what we know about the VVT and MDS in a 5.7. Use the wrong/ too heavy an oil, and you’ll get a MIL. This leads me to think that the 6.4’s MDS is different in some way. Too bad we don’t have a house FCA- all lines tech/ guru who is more than into his job to jump in on this pondering.

My 6.4 had intermittent startup clatter, cold tick, and hot tick on the factory recommended Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W40 synthetic. I then tried Amsoil Signature Series 0W40, and it was worse, WAY worse, as in sounding like a thrashing machine. I then ran Red Line 0W40, and that quieted it down, but it got noisy again within 5K miles. Then I ran Red Line 5W40, and it stayed quiet for my normal OCI of 6-8K miles, still changing well before the EVIC. It cost me more to do an oil change on my 6.4 Hemi than my Cummins.

Maybe you could check this out with a switch to the normal HEMI oil. Like Wayne said - duty cycle, means as long as one isnt pulling trailers all day long in the mountains it will be just fine.
You tried all kinds of non specified oil, why not one more.

Yeah, to bad. Duty cycle makes totally sense to me! The HD pulls more then double the weight of a 1500.
So if one is running it as a grocery getter he might get a decent and quiet engine just by a switch of the oil spec.

I also found a post that an FCA engineer said at a Q&A at the factory that 5W-30 would be perfectly fine but they decided against it to be on the safe side if someone is abusing the Truck.

Except mine started ticking long before I was pulling heavy with it. My 2500 was a 2015, and the toy hauler is a 2019. The SRT oil AKA Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W40 has more moly in it than the other factory oils, judging by VOA's I have seen posted on other forums. Lots of moly, and the ester base seem to be the magic elixir to kill Hemi Tick. It will generally take about 700-1000 miles for a ticking Hemi to get quiet. My buddy ran 10W40 Red Line in his 5.7, and it never threw any oil codes. On the gasser forums, 5W30 Red Line seems to be the oil of choice for noisy 5.7 Hemis.

Not all Hemis tick, of that there is no doubt, but high moly content, and ester base seem to be what to look for to keep it at bay.
