Hey folks!

It's been a while since I needed to be on here. I finally sold my faithful 97 2500 with 440,000 miles a year or so ago - it was too much truck for my wife, and she needed one for her flower farming business. We bought a 2015 Tacoma instead, and yeah, I cried a little.

She's since sold the farm, and now, wouldn't ya know it, we're gonna need a big truck again! Thinking of getting into the world of RV, and a Toyota is obviously not going to cut it. I've decided that a truck camper is going to be the way to go for us, based on versatility, maneuverability, and storage limitations, and truck campers mean DUALLIES!!

I'll make this as short as possible. I found a 04.5 3500 DRW QC auto with 140,000 miles. It's being sold by a nice woman close(ish) by as a package deal with her 2006 Host truck camper, and she's asking $35,000. Her husband (no longer with us) bought the truck and camper each new, and has taken great care of them. I am no expert, but the truck seems in great shape. No smoke on start up, idles smooth, no blow by out the crank case, clean of oil underneath, a/c blows cold on both sides, transmission shifts well, but the fluid is a little brownish. I'm figuring a transmission rebuild into my decision anyway. Interior is damn near perfect, too, even the dash is in one piece! I looked through all the service & maintenance records as well, they've kept em all.

The only catch is that probably 75% - 80% of those 140,000 miles have been with this 4,000 lb camper on the back. They took it down through Mexico several times, even as far as to Panama. Up to Alaska as well. I know these engines love that kind of hard work, but not so much the transmissions and front ends... I don't have much about what to look for as far as front end component wear & tear, or how to identify problems.

Bottom line: the camper could probably be resold for $15k - $20k or so, meaning that I'd be getting a low(ish) mile, one owner 04.5 for around $15,000, knowing that I'd probably owe it a transmission rebuild, and possibly a front end rebuild as well. Around $7,000 ballpark for both jobs maybe.

What do you all think? Is it worth it? I have to admit, the truck is so clean and runs so well, I'm already a little biased from seeing and driving it briefly today. Man, it felt good to drive a 5.9L again. But am I missing anything? What else should I look for? How big a deal is it that the miles have been under such a heavy camper?

It sounds like a pretty good deal.

As far as the trans that’s not much of a load so if he drove it like he maintained it then you could be fine for a while, or go in and upgrade a few small things before anything breaks.

The front end is likely needing some love at 140K miles, but if they were all highway miles it might not be too bad.

The fact that it was always loaded wouldn’t sway my decision at all.
 
I agree with AH64ID, nothing sounds too scary there. ATF +4 gets that dull color anyway, so that wouldn't worry me too much. Being loaded, again, no biggie. Maybe a fresh set of springs IF you feel they are sagged out. Sounds like a pretty nice rig.
 
Sounds like a really nice rig. I think you have the right attitude have the front end gone through and change all the fluids. Only other thing it could need would be injectors. I would go for it.
 
Thanks for the response, everyone. I’m really taking a crash course on these 3rd gen 5.9s now. In my reading last night, I learned that I probably should also mention that these folks ran into some bad fuel at some point in Central America. Sounds like they didn’t really notice much of a problem, but it put the rig of a travel companion out of commission for a bit. Is there anything simple to look for as far as compromised fuel system or injectors that’s easy to check? Truck has pyro, boost, and trans temp gauges, but not fuel pressure.

I should stress that I absolutely do not think that anyone is trying to pull a fast one on me with this truck. But at the same time, it there were anything wrong with it, the (widowed) seller would have no idea. She also seems VERY reluctant to have us drive off with it to have it gone over by a specialist, either diesel or RV.

Why? That seems like a red flag to me. Although for the price it doesn't seem all that risky. But you would think she would be totally fine having it inspected by someone knowledgeable.

It’s not the inspections she objects to, it’s handing me the keys to take it somewhere. I don’t get the feeling she’s ever sold a vehicle (or anything) before. We are working on some ideas. And honestly, I’m more worried about the camper getting a once over than the truck.

Well could be several reasons why, Lady doesn't know you at all is concern for the truck well being. Possible never has sold a truck before, be patience here!
 
Ah, that makes sense. On the camper check caulking with a fine tooth comb. Really, really check the "wings", bottom side walls at rear. Wing rot is common. Not that you can't fix it, but price adjustment for sure.
 
Add me to the seems like a good idea list. The camper bonus means you could try it out a few times so you'll know for sure what you like/don't like about it, if you need a trailer rather than a camper, etc., before shopping for the RV. A friend of mine bought a trailer five months ago, used it three times, then sold it and got a different one.
 
Many mobile RV services out there. At that price and with a hot RV and vehicle market someone else may look it over themselves and its GONE! Do what ya need to, but, don’t hesitate.
