The OEM Transforce tires are done at 14k on my 19'.... Time for new shoes. I've run Toyo Open Country AT for years... Looking at the latest AT III 285/65R18 to replace the factory 275/70R18's. The truck is leveled. Was looking at wheels also but it's almost dizzying trying to figure it as the selection and variables are in the thousands of choices. To my understanding.... The OEM alloy I have is an 18 x 8 with an offset of ET20 (+20mm?). Would I have any benefit of going to a 9" wide wheel? I like 18's because the price of tires is acceptable as 20's seem pricey at near $400 a tire. I'd like to appropriate and not sticking out past the OEM flares.

I also see the Toyo Open Country AT III 295/70R18 as a choice. Should I go to a 9"?

Thanks for any input or help.

The 285/65R18 is actually a shorter tire than the OEM 275/70R18’s.

Personally I’d look at the 285/75/R18. It’s 1.5” taller than OEM and will fit a 8” wheel perfectly.

If you don’t want something that tall the 295/70R18 is only .9” taller than stock as will be just fine on your 8” run, just don’t run 80 psi when empty.

Another way to save some cash is to look at Cooper Tires, cheaper, better, and made in the USA. I’m also biased, as I’ve never had great life out of Toyo’s not seen it on any of my families rigs so we all abandoned them.

I would. People have argued with me about it but it's mostly those who don't want to spend the money. I don't blame them for that, I just think that on a tire that is over 11-1/2'' wide at the cross section, a 9'' rim would lay the tread down better. You could get away with the 8'' rim, but..... Why? Unless you have to (which is understandable)

Otherwise, I think I'd stay with the 275/70-80 in the Toyo on the stockers.

Just me, just my $.02 (and worth even less)

Tire Rack and Discount Tire Direct have some pretty good Tire and Rim packages. Worth a look if for no other reason than comparison shopping.

I never looked at Sam's or Costco for Tire and Rim packages. Don't know if they do them. I have used Sam's for tires for the last 35 years. Except for the last time I bought tires for my Wife's car. I tried Bridgestone's on them and, oh my, my what a difference between them and eco-garbage Michelins that came as OEM. Got a great deal on them at Firestone when they were running a sooper-special. Then her car gets totalled out in a rear-end collision a few Months later. A bad one.

I'll be looking sooner rather than later, let us know how you like your Toyo's. I hear a lot of good things about them.

Buddy who tows 2x a week with a 1/2 ton V6 gets decent life out of Cooper AT3's. I did not get good life out of the Discoverer HT3 commercial tire, however, they did wear evenly and handled well. The treadwear warranty helped get a new set. Best life I have had is from Michelins, but, to me they are too soft and squirmy.

I shipped a lot of Toyo Open Country tires here in AZ. Heavy tire, period. Didn't run long enough to comment on life.

I have gone with wider tires and they don't last any longer.

I’ve run both the 285 and the 295’s on 18” factory wheels . I run unloaded 65 psi on all 4 wheels. Any higher and you really take out the center tread on the rears. I upgraded to 9” wheels this last year. I’m finding the tires are wearing much more even. Make sure you get the right back spacing if you go away from stock wheels.

Even on the stock 275’s 65psi is too much for the rears to wear evenly. I run 35 unloaded, but get even tire wear from 50 down.

According to toyo 8.5” is the optimal width for the 295/70R18. So either a 1/2” too narrow or too wide, is the cost worth the upgrade?

If you do start looking at the Discount Tire or Costco rims, make sure you check the load rating on the rim. You need a rim rated at least 3500lb to keep you 7000 GAWR and I've seen some to of the DT rims only rated at 3250 or 3450 or lower. Gear Alloy brand has some 18x9 that are rated for 3700 while most other brands top out at 3600 or at least they did when I did rims on my 06 about 7 years ago. ;)

Method has 4500lbs rims now, that's the one I bought.

The 2014+ wheels are +57mm offset except for Power wagons which are around +44, ram never came factory with a +20mm wheel.

gets decent life out of Cooper AT3's

And I stopped by my buddy's place I noted that all 4 Cooper AT3 were separating the tread off the carcass. Crack running around the tires in a complete circle about 1/2" from the tread on the sidewall. :( (This is the fellow that tows a scrap metal trailer 2-3X per week with a V6 Dakota or his V6 1/2 ton RAM.)

So let me walk back the AT3 suggestion as I ain't gonna use them on my ride now. (Warranty, but, still costs money to swap tires.)

Are you sure they haven’t been over loaded or under inflated?

You are going to make me run the numbers on a V6 for towing aren't you. o_O I already come to a full stop with V6 for towing being the wrong tool for the job. I guess I better run the numbers and weight police my buddy. :D

So you're not sure :p

Just trying to rule out driver error vs tire defect.

I've had multiple sets of coopers over the last few years and I have not seen what he is experiencing.

I’ve had either 5 or 6 sets of Toyo 35x12.5 tires on stock rims and have gone quite a bit past the life expectancy of the tires. I usually run around 65psi cold and rotate every 5K miles. I’ve had great luck with Toyo’s. These were AT’s, AT2’s and CT’s.
