mwilson, what mods to your suspension did you do when you went to a camper. I just traded my AF 27-5L for an AF811 for my 2017 3500 short bed and have been upgrading a few things. Tires and rims probably next for added margin of saftey

This guy needs an 18 speed for good reason...however a one ton hooked to a camper is fine with 6 speeds.....again, just my opinion..:D

Theres “nothing there” for a Cummins adding more gears to the six already present . . is correct.

Where’s the analysis for those who say otherwise? (How & When).

Variable-Geometry turbocharger with yet more sophisticated fuel control broadened the effective power range.

An 8k trucklet and you’re daily hooking to a 25k trailer? Move to a 45/5500. (Which itself won’t benefit from more gears).

What terrain and loads will pay off from more gears?

The trucklet is overpowered already. (If fuel economy mattered it’d be spec’d differently than with the 6.7L. It doesn’t, as solo your barely better than me while bobtail in a KW twice as large, twice as heavy, and twice the engine).

You’ve already got double OD. Why is the highway FE so poor on new CTD? 14? 15? 17?

As towing is 1/2 of vacation miles while traveling, (write that down and understand it), it matters to get that pair to a suitable minimum initial and ongoing expense, otherwise a comfy sedan and lower cost motels makes more sense. (Many of which feature microwaves & refrigerators. A hot plate and an ENGEL in the car trunk then replicates what most RV’ers actually do to “cook”).

As always you make very good points especially cost. Sadly times have changed. You can't rent a hotel room at times for any amount of money. We can debate about a planned route with a reservation vs. breakdown or otherwise your plans change suddenly.

The folks across the street traveled from MI to here last year and had to sleep in their car because Hotels were full of Aliens paid for by our own Government. I expected to see them show up this year with an RV. The decided to do "insane" hours on the road instead and did the trip in two days.

Even so "Hotel" was never a good option here in Arizona. Further finding a place to eat or even a bathroom without simply taking a whiz on the side of the road between the doors: because places are few and far between. And the ones you do find may charge you. Something to be said for your own clean restroom. You have seen the "Rest Areas" close from political stupids being cheap.

Sometimes "conference" or "show" or something you never cared or knew about has rented everything in the area. Nothing available. The A/C quits in your hotel room you are SOL, if, you had a reservation and got a room. They will re-rent the room at a discount when things are full up. The A/C, or two, on your RV YOU have control over it's maintenance and age.

Yeah, Boondock it. I know you will agree the smaller the RV the better.

Natural disasters like wildfires same deal: no hotel rooms you can rent. RV is a evacuation and then living quarters. I have had mine prepped and ready to go when the fires were 6 miles away. Didn't go, but, the "GO" message happened IF your Cell phone was connected to the closer to the fire tower.

Well maybe just "trouble": look at the "Class Action Lawsuit" GM has going on over their 8 Speed Shudder TCC slipping transmission now. Flush with better oil and then if no fix maybe replace the Torque Converter...

Bluntly they have enough trouble figuring out how to use all 6 gears, now. If I could still physically shift a MT I would be doing so.

A friend just picked up a 2017 Powerjoke with 6-Auto and we discussed this.

Said he was running with a friend of his in a ‘21. Said the other man never pulled ahead (not a race, both truck drivers), just that the other guys truck spent a lot more time shifting. That it was noticeable.

Granted, both were empty/solo.
Same model spec.

Note to non-truck-drivers: Loaded, the guys with 13s leave me behind everywhere it counts with this weirdo KW 8-speed. When it doesn’t matter at all . . I can leave them. (Narrow power band).

There are times I get tired of a LONG HEAVY man trans pickup. Usually because I’m stuck in D/FW traffic with a LONG list of stops. Health & age drag on me.

Heading west across the Brazos River is another story. Same with backing my trailer or maneuvering thru a fuel stop.

5+1 is okay, but it’s the Auto equivalent of 3+1.

That second OD AH64ID was teasing our brains with awhile back sure stuck hard in mine. 5+2 Manual really would be “perfect”.

There’s a couple of times I’d be so tired coming home out of the oilfield Pete that I’d be floating the NV-5600 gears on the way home . . till the moment I realized it and graunched the next one (ha!). A big heavy Baby 13 won’t ever be in my future.

5+1 works. But the 4+2 Auto is extra-easy to live with (ricer boys excepted). The Auto big trucks have to use brakes (all disc) to break momentum. Why your trailer needs them (second importance).
