Greetings Pards; Had my first NON dealer oil change @ local trusted shop, for a little less $$ and better personalities.

The shop called to report cannot get a Fleetguard oil filter. I replied that its necessary to support any future engine claims I may have to make on my extended maintenance contract. May not be a big deal, but I can imagine a claims adjuster looking at a Purolator oil filter & saying "Sorry Charlie, this engine fix is on you."

Luckily I have a Cummins service & repair facility jes 20 miles away. They couldn't find a filter for me, as their database is not Mopar compatible, buut they could find correct filter based upon my engine S/N. Whaat?

Parts guy was nice enough to come out to my truck (glad I drove it) & found the (white) label on the engine cover's center rear; done deal! I complied with his request to be added to their customer database for future reference should I need it; again ***** service!

That doesn't surprise me at all. Ram buys the engines from Cummins with no warranty. Ram eats any and all warranty issues that come up with the engines. Seems strange that an independent shop wasn't able to find a Fleetgard filter! With any other type of filter, they could tell you to deal with the filter manufacture!

Since the first Cummins Diesel Dodge Truck it is the very same oil filter - and they can't find or source it?
Sorry man but I'd look for a different shop then.

Hi Ozy; Slight correction for ya; mechanically the filters may fit anything, but the motor's "filtering specs" have changed, thus the 2018 6.7 filter is spec'd for 3 microns, as others the same size for other years engines are typically 5 microns, etc. That's why I was picky with regards to "correct" filter being installed.

Actually the Mopar oem filter is the same for all years and comes with the fluted bottom. So is the standard Fleetguard LF3972, all years.

If you want the upgrade Fleetguard filter, it is the LF16035, again all years, but not required.

The Fleetguard LF3894 is the "good" filter with a smooth bottom.

Your micron ratings are for the fuel filter, and even then all 2010+ 6.7’s use the same engine mounted fuel filter.

What Fleetguard did they give you? The basic LF3972 is rated at 30um @ 95%, nothing fancy.

Speaking of purolator, both models for the ISB are rated batter than the LF3972 with a rating of 20um @ 97.5% for the cellulose and 99.9% for the synthetic filter.

As long as the filter is specific to this application then they can’t deny warranty based on brand. I run the Donalson DBL7349 myself, as it has the best specs for these engines.

I also use the Donaldson DBL 7349 15 micron oil filters, I buy them 6 at at time from CROSSFILTERS on amazon, normal price is $107 but right now they are on sale for $99 with free shipping, that's $16.50 each...

WOW gang!! Thanks for the great input.
I kinda stopped being a backyard 'wrench monkey' when I sold my '04.5. Guess the 'maintenance romance' got worn thin over 63 years, eh.

Oh BTW, the $245 tab for LOF includes $80.11 labor to get at the filter & then putting intake structures back in place!

They keep improving s..t 'till it doesn't work any more, eh. Beware, new crazies are getting drivers licenses every day...play safe. Wally

Morning Sir; My local Dealers in SE Wisc charging $260 for Dino-oil & $280 for semi-synt. Love Discount Tire 'round here; free rot's & flat tire repair. 2.5 gal jug of Rotella T5 semi-synth is $70 here ($2 < than Ams.) @ Farm-Fleet store.

Your dlr is cutting a good deal for your VIP customer status?!? Dlr rate here is $145/hr & the 'book' says 'bout 45min for oil & filter change. You're a bit far down the road for me to use your shop! :) Travel safe...Wally

Cummins parts departments typically use the engine serial number to access the parts lists--that is how their software works. I suggest getting a supply of the oil filters from Geno's, and also upgrading to the Stratapore media.
Thanks Pard; forgot 'bout Geno's, but had to obtain one that afternoon. :)

My dealer now sells diesel synthetic oil changes for $245 and use Rotella T-6 synthetic, last year the bT6 oil changes were going for $190, back in 2018 when I lived in north IA my small town Dodge dealer installed my oil & filter in my 2006 CTD for $10, a tire rotation was an extra $17.00 and they loved all the none warranty work I paid for on my truck. Oh out here in PDX metro Oregon the shop rate for dealership diesel repair is $200 hr... I've always said a small gift card now & then to your service adviser goes along ways, for me it paid off when I recently had a problem over a recall and again yesterday when a DPF sensor went out at 2 in the afternoon, I was able to get right in the shop and truck fixed in approx. 2.25 hours :)

Have they not always done synthetic changes? 5w-40 is always a synthetic.

165$ at Valvoline shops with filter from me. Fully Synth Oil. Price slightly changes with location, probably because of taxes.

Unless the filter itself failed and took out your engine with it's own debris via clogged piston cooling jets... This IS a thing that happens to Cummins Diesel Engines. Getting your engine paid for by the filter OEM is fun.

Example for FRAM:

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...on-51-000-miles-fram-filter-the-cause.250686/

I have cut many filters open and find that some are not assembled properly or have failed in use. Purolator's have an earned bad reputation for tearing their pleats after so many miles in use and are not recommended to go over 10,000 miles. It's printed on the box of some of their filters, like 10,000 miles is a long ways. It's not as your engine can go 15,000 miles on an oil change.

We are lucky that the OEM MOPAR filter is a re-painted Fleetguard. If you have any concerns about what kind of filter vs. Warranty: use a OEM Mopar filter purchased at a RAM dealer. Otherwise, yes, filter failures that take out your engine may make you go through the filter OEM.
