98.5 24 Valve need help choosing a complete exhaust system.

Hi, So the previous owner dumped the exhaust right behind the cab. I would like to either replace it from there or in that area or just replace it complete from front to back. I would like a bolt on and go system. Do I need to or should I change sizes ? Any tips and pointers would be appreciated.



Truck as a tuner and stock turbo, I have no idea down the road if we will upgrade turbo or not.

I am still on the original complete exhaust and turbo system on my truck (385,000 miles). I run a Smarty S03 tuner with RV275 hp injectors on a mild tune. I personally don't have a reason too upgrade my exhaust system. The engine performs well and fuel economy is very good.

I would keep the stock exhaust if I had it, Buying a new OEM is expensive I am sure and the cheap Napa or what ever chain store stuff doesn't last. I am hoping to find a nice complete quality aftermarket system.

Get the 4" MBRP aluminized no muffler and then add the 9" x 54" Donaldson or the exact same thing in NAPA. No drone and great flow.

Back in March of 2009, I ordered and had a local muffler/exhaust shop install a Farmboy Diesel Performance 5" straight pipe exhaust on my 2002 and it is still in good shape doing its job. They were very good to work with and sent my order via UPS in a timely manner. It was an aluminized steel exhaust. It was a very good quality but budget friendly exhaust. Made a BIG improvement with high EGT issues I was having at the time and sounds great. Straight pipes are not for everyone and you can get the muffler and tip if you choose. My truck sees a lot of use off road and on our farms so the noise is not an issue for me. https://farmboysdiesel.com/product/budget-exhaust-fbd-5-straight-pipe-6/ They make a 4 inch exhaust as well. Stainless exhausts are available too. The 5" pipe I installed just barely fit by the spare tire and the provided down pipe was a great fit as well.

I also recommend a 4" MBRP Turbo-Back System. I would use the MBRP Muffler. I had well over 400K miles on mine when I sold the truck. 5" offers no benefit and will give you fits fitting it in.

My experience was BAD DRONE towing with the MBRP muffler. I started with their straight pipe then thought the MBRP muffler would help the drone, NOPE!!! I can see why as it's straight thru.

Mine didn't have a drone. They have the louvers cut in the inside in one direction and can be installed either way. Mine was installed with the open side of the louvers toward the rear.

I didn't order the muffler with mine. Under higher boost you can definitely hear the exhaust but normal driving, it is acceptable in my opinion.

No, not necessarily. I'd suggest getting your son to drive by you hammer down while you're in another vehicle and see what you think with no muffler.

I second the drive-by...or a tunnel/underpass if available. I never owned one but a pal's muffler-free 24-valve seemed to bark at startup and otherwise was only "loud" driving along a sound wall or heavily forested road...I put my window up and my First Gen isn't what you'd call quiet.

No I have not used this truck to pull a load yet. I know its loud like any cummins of that era when he starts it in the morning, While driving it does not seem that bad.

Yes, open highway they are fine but passing an RV or motorhome they are just nasty. Here is a video of my '01 equipped with a 4" turbo back and performance muffler, next to a bridge wall. I ended up with a Napa/Walker like 12v98 suggested, nice and quiet.

I did run the oem 3" exhaust for about 12 years with just the resonator and 4" tail pipe and it was fine, no muffler. The resonator has 3" inlet and 4" outlet.

When my original pipe rotted out I went with the lifetime warranty MBRP 4" system. That was about a million miles ago. They replaced the muffler last year after a phone call and a picture of the muffler.

I like it. I recognize the hood. I recognize the bridge and I recognize the scenery. When my wife watched the video, I had to assure her that I wasn't planning to replace the intact and good OEM system on our truck. Tho' I did put a turbo muffler on our long-departed full size Wagoneer . . .

I had the Silverline 4" (same as MBRP) and recommend it.. Mine was the 409 stainless, it got surface rust pretty quick and Id have gone with the 308 if I did it again. I wrapped the down pipe with heat tape and coated, to keep heat off my NV5600,.. overall very good value for money IMHO. I did not have any drone and liked the sound of the engine, but mine was a common rail and had 4;10s so not in the drone zone towing on the highway as my RPM was a titch higher...
