just got off the phone with a friend of mine. He had his filters changed and the truck wouldn't start.

Turns out the "OEM" filter he got off Amazon is a fake and the plastic piece that opens the check valve when fully seated doesn't open... which is the cause of the no start condition.

Buyer beware. I'm sticking to Geno's.

Counterfeit filters what’s next. Heck my favorite Mexican restaurant stopped putting pico out at the hot sauce pepper onion bar. I ask them why no more pico they said people were stealing it. He went to the back and got some for me. I changing world

This was a first for me. I changed the oil and the fuel filters on my wife's 2013 2500 (it's about the same as mine only with a short bed) this past Saturday. Everything was going smoothly until I tried to start it. The first time I tried, it fired and ran for about two seconds then shut off. So I went through the priming procedure again and tried to start it. This time it wouldn't fire at all. Rinse, repeat several more times with the same result. At this point, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't do anything different this oil change than I had on all the other oil changes on both of our trucks, so I figured that I must have gotten it air locked some how. Got it towed to my local shop (AAA comes in handy sometimes) and they found that the issue was the rear fuel filter. It wasn't engaging the drain back valve properly so no fuel was getting into the filter. They replaced that filter, primed it, and now it runs just fine.

The filter that I put on it was a Mopar filter that I purchased off of Amazon. In fact, both fuel filters I used are Mopar filters I got off of Amazon. This is the first time that I have ever had an issue like this with a filter. I primarily use either Fleetguard or Mopar filters (depending on price/availability). When the shop told me it was the fuel filter, the first thing that I thought of was the thread that someone posted on here a while back about counterfeit Mopar filters being sold on E-Bay and Amazon. It now makes me wonder if I got one of the counterfeit filters or one that just slipped through Q/A. The packaging and everything on these filters looked legit to me, so I used them in good faith. Silly me! All I know is that I am done buying filters off of Amazon. The shop replaced the defective Mopar filter with a Baldwin filter and I have a Wix fuel filter on the rear of my truck because of availability issues with Mopar and Fleetguard filters last summer when I changed my oil.

Anyway, I just wanted to put this out there for you all as a word of caution. This was the most expensive Mopar filter that I never used.

I ordered the Mopar filter kit from Amazon last week. Removed my old filter with the cap tool that goes on the bottom of the oil filter. Go to put the new Mopar oil filter on and the cap tool does not fit the oil filter. The oil filter is smaller in diameter on the bottom. In a tight spot so went and bought a NAPA gold filter and the cap tool fits perfect. Next I changed the fuel filters, went through the whole prime process and you guessed it, a big NO START. So now to go look for fuel filters. Thanks for your post, I think that is my issue. I even ordered a Doc's oil filter and the same, cap tool would not fit it!!

Another safe source if you have one close by and don’t want freight charges is a Big Truck dealer such as Peterbilt, Mack / Volvo and Freightliner / Western Star. If the dealer orders filters on a stock or direct ship order there are no freight charges.
Fleetguard product ships directly to the OEM’s PDC or to the dealer, no chance for counterfeit filters to get mixed in.

I've been getting my filters from Geno's ever since and haven't had any issues.

Something to think about with fuel filters. I’m a diesel tech for a large pump rental company. We buy direct from Baldwin so I asked the parts guy to get me a price on fuel filters for my truck. He miss understood and ordered them right from Napa thinking I wanted them for my service truck. We also get a discount from Napa. Look them up online. Napa gold filters are right around $250 for the pair. The rear filter has no markings other than made in china and the front filter has zero markings on it. My cost was under $75 for the pair. Do we really need to pay the high price to get a quality filter? Or are Napa filters junk now too? It kind of made me mad that there’s that much mark up on them. I realize they have to make a living

If your still under factory warranty I would stay with OEM filters to cover your @SS as OEM is said to be 3 micron Nano Net and no one else has nano net only Fleetguard/Mopar last I heard. You can buy the front filter Fleetguard FS53000 ( same as Mopar filter) for $105 for 2 with free shipping ( have a FS53000 in my 22 right now): https://crossfilters.com/products/fs53000-fleetguard-fuel-water-separator?variant=7249152245807 now for the rear filter the lowest price I saw last year was Rock Auto, you can check Genos garage to see who has the lowest price with shipping between the two.

What is the worst that could happen with a bad filter? No start is easy fix. Letting dirt by and it eats the injectors and high pressure pump… I would send the Napa China stuff back. Napa loves to be repainted Wix and Wix has had me walk over their re-imagined Duramax fuel filter (plastic body vs metal) when it sucked air at the WIF sensor threads. Wix can’t even meet specs for a bolder and gravel screen fuel filters for a 1993 IDI forgotten diesel engine. Sadly they are better than some of the No Quality China filters showing up.

Zero markings screams “knock-off” counterfeit to me.

You don't want air entering a high pressure injection system constantly. Can end up with cavitation and lack of lubrication. Not to mention poor/weird engine performance.

I didn't care about the filters I used on my little Jeep Compass when I had it, only because those engines are dime a dozen and cheap. I would NOT do it on a diesel engine. Cummins or EcoD, just because the price of either of those engines is the price of a small car.
