4 wheel shift lever

I very rarely use my 4 wheel drive, but today I was approaching a muddy lane and to be safe was going to use 4 wheel drive. I reached for the lever and just flopped back and forth!!

I have not been under it yet to see why. Hoping someone out there had the same thing happen to them

Sounds like the linkage clip has rotted off and the linkage is now disconnected. Time for an old piece of carpet and a flashlight. Good luck.

I used the dorman version which lasted about a year. the oem lasted about 17-18 years

I've replaced mine twice in 18 years. what also happens is the metal linkage gets lost too, unless it is caught early. I've always thought of using some wire to capture the linkage when it fails the next time. I now check the linkage, each time I crawl under the truck, for oil changes. Btw, I've used an aftermarket and OEM plastic/rubber/polywhatever puck, and both worked fine. The aftermarket one has been in since 2021.

FYI, the transfer case kit is $18 from Amazon. It comes with 2 bushings and the metal linkage.

I got the replacement shifter rod and installed it. Now it will only shift to to 2H. Is it an adjustment on the shifter rod? If it is an adjustment on the shifter rod. How to set it?

It's kind of trial and error, if you don't have an original length to measure it to. I just guestimated, and had my daughter hold the shifter where I felt it should normally be. Then I crawled under and tightened it down. I've done this twice, since I've bought the truck new. Seems to work for me.
This applies to the adjustable rods, like I posted. I don't know what kind you installed.
