3rd gen steering box vs 2nd gen steering box

What manufacture is the 3rd gen '05 steering box?

I think the 2nd gen box is saginaw

Seems the ratios are a little different . Anyone know of have link to tech info?

My '05 the steering "feel" is way easier, or touchy compared to my 2nd gen'99 which feels more like you have more road feel , less touchy, less powerful, closer to a manual steering feel.

Anyone else notice that ..... ?

My original OEM steering box was 4 1/4 turns stop to stop (October, 2001 build). My brother-in-law's '02 (May, 2002 build) was a faster ratio - just over 3 turns stop to stop. Might have been in preparation for the next generation truck.

My current steering gear box (a new Borgeson Delphi series 680, BO800120) is exactly 4 turns stop to stop. So far, this is my favorite steering gear box. Of interest is that it was advertised as a 3 1/2 turns stop to stop. I made several calls to Borgeson and finally talked to an engineer regarding my expectations. After some lengthy conversation, she delved into it deeper. Come to find out, much to her surprise, there were two different boxes built and sold under the same part number. You had know idea which one you would get. I told her that I actually like the one I received as it feels like a faster ratio when parking the truck, but has very good feedback on the highway (kinda like you mentioned).

Here are my notes in my maintenance log regarding the Borgeson steering gear box.

New steering gearbox - 4 turns from lock to lock (expecting 3 1/2 turns). Contacted Borgeson - representative Barbara said that there are two boxes made for this era of Dodge trucks. She said that one is a 14:1 ratio and the other is a variable ratio with the highest ratio in the center of steering. She said that both of the steering boxes are sold under the same part number and that the customer has no say in which steering box the customer receives.


My brother-in-law's '03 truck is a fast ratio and touchier steering.
