    Reman 48re

I bought a GM 6L80 reman from Certified. Seems they know their stuff.

’99 Ram manual transmission - rebuild or replace

1-3/8” input shaft is a very common upgrade on these transmissions -- it just wasn’t one I planned. Since I have that part that is what I will use. I did also order the 5th gear and improved main shaft. Why New Venture didn’t fully spline the mainshaft for 5th gear right from the start is...

’99 Ram manual transmission - rebuild or replace

I have most of the parts I need to rebuild my NV4500. I made a mistake when ordering and got the 1-3/8” input shaft instead of the 1-1/4”. Not a big deal. I will have to replace the clutch but while it is not in poor shape it may as well be replaced all things considered. Question I have is...

More questions than answers part 1 million

At this point that is a snipe hunt. The injector pump is not sending fuel to cylinders 1,2 and 3. That is the first problem that needs to be solved. The condition of the those cylinders is irrelevant until there is reason to suspect them, and they cannot be suspect until the injector pump is...

More questions than answers part 1 million

What cylinders were shut down when the cold weather warmup (3 cylinder mode) was activated?

    Vp44 replacement

My ’99 has a mid level build from Blue Chip Diesel. Straight forward deal and no problems with it since installation a couple years ago. Pretty sure the original had a computer failure.

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Wheel bearings

Probably just that manufacturing location? SKF is a global company. FWIW PEER is a bearing manufacturer that is a subsidiary of SKF, with much of its production in China. I have heard some negative comments about PEER bearings but my own experience has been that they are really good.

    ATF+4 in a nv4500

Aside from 5th gear problems, which are curable, NV4500s last just fine at factory power levels if they are maintained and the user uses reasonable sense operating it. Way better than automatics of that era. I pulled loads that had my GCVWR beyond double of what Dodge allowed and that wasn’t...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Filter Changes

Do change your transfer case oil. Pay particular attention that the oil in it is not over full or has gear oil in it (manual trans). My manual transmission failed in part because the oil in the trans was making its way into the transfer case.

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Opened a can of worms

A one piece manifold on a Cummins 6BT is kind of like a dog that walks on his hind legs only. It may work for a time put certainly not ideal. Most every other manufacturer of similar length turbo diesel engines made the exhaust manifold 2 piece. I know you could see how much the exhaust...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Opened a can of worms

The crack in mine was just barely visible from the top of the engine, but when I crawled underneath to get a better look it was pretty obvious. When I took it to the dealer they said “ oh those never crack.” I said you look at it and tell me what you think that funny line is. “oh yeah it is...

    Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Opened a can of worms

There is a big crack in the floor of the right side turbo port as the manifold appears in the picture. I would bet that crack goes back to where the two sides of the manifold come together and goes up toward the top of the manifold. Mine cracked in a similar fashion just before the engine...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Wheel bearings

Check your axle U joints before replacing the wheel bearing. I had noise coming from the front of my ’99. Bought a new bearing assembly figuring the bearings were going out. When I looked closer I found the U joints were done for.

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Wheel bearings

Based on what I’ve seen, NAPA around here will give you National bearings, and they tend to be Taiwanese made. Probably middle of the road quality.

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Wheel bearings

You are correct, this is a very real concern. In this case I don’t know what to recommend, but if I am buying just a bearing I will NOT buy through an open 3rd party vendor like Amazon or eBay unless the bearing in question is not real mission critical. Everything else has to come through a...
