Sounds like the VP 44. My truck was doing the same thing. Had the VP repalced and no problems. Luckily I ws still under the extended warranty!! No problems since the replacement.
Not to worry. Most diesels will puff white at some point in their lifetime. Having worked the construction industry running heavy equipment for a number of years all diesels will puff white at some point in time. My 01 2500 puffs white now and again and has done it since new.
I just had one installed on my new 07 Mega Cab and it cost me $1600. 00, total package. I opted for the shift lever switch as I did not want to have to be bending down going down a mountain pulling my fiver to work the Jake.
I ran into the same problem w/my '01 w/the in tank pump. I added a Carter 4600 series (7 psi) pump in the original lift pump location and replaced the plastic supply line with a 7/16 in. supply line and now I run 16 psi at idle and no lower than 13 psi at WOT and that was pulling an 11,000 lb...
Go to www.dodge.com and go to customer service and fill out their questionaire (you will need your VIN No. ) and they will tell you, usually within 24 hrs. The quickest and easiest way I have found to get technical info.
