Ford F350 W/Cummins Shift prob. Manual

dumb question but here goes anyway - what's the fitting on the top of the valve cover for? (See posts 115/117). Thanks and beautiful job on the truck.

It is a fill hole for motor oil. You can order the oil fill valve covers from Cummins. It allows you to plug off the stupid front cover elbowed fill tube that ends up leaking and burping oil down the front of the pulleys and belt drives. Makes more room for accesories as well if you are mounting anything on drivers side upper part of the engine.

It desperately needs a rear bumper.

Travis. .

Not to mention a trip to Autoworld to get that slug of an engine out. I really wish I could order a 550 with an inline engine option, either a CAT, Cummins, or detroit, the 650's are just too big to take to the mall.

well, rick is here - we will be sending him home on tuesday - we have pretty much figured out how to make the tach signal correct and need a cummins part, ordered to be here monday - will let you know then. all the guages and senders have been wired in and everything works great, the cruise has been changed over to the gas version (to get around the pcm control of the 6. 0 signal) and that should be working tomorrow, need to get some info off the CD i have here at home so we gave up for the day.

he drove it yesterday, it lays rubber in all gears... . lol!! it turned out just awesome.

i still haven't got my final pictures and it is snowing today so hopefully the sun will come out for mondays outside photo session.

on to the next one - the old F550 is already started and like i said, piece of cake - older 12V.

then another Ford - 03 this time - we have now learned all the tricks..... :)

Nice job, I'll bet Rick has some tired smile muscles :D

Please keep us up to date on your next conversions, I find them great reading!

he was grinning all the way... . lol - he is just a little worried about the trip home, it has been snowing since yesterday and right now we have about 5 inches - it should stop tomorrow and we aren't letting him start out til tues, its supposed to be better then - i will check roads for them then, they may be staying with us... . LOL :)

Awesome job guys! I'm just in the middle of the 12v/nv5600 swap in my 99F450 and you have just motivated me to put a few more hours a night and get it done! :)

take your time and do everything the right way. cutting corners and rigging things up just results in a butcher job (and there's some horrid examples of butchering out there). we take a minimum of 130 man hours and have done over 200 - but when we are done, everything is perfect and looks factory. we can send our customers home 2000 miles away confident that they will have many years of trouble free driving.

Thanks for the tip! This will be my first cummins swap but I've got a lot of fabrication experince including 6 small block chev swaps and a couple 4. 3L swaps into various things :)

I'm curious, you mentioned tilting the engine for front diff... so do you mean rotating the motor slightly out of plumb (top to bottom) or do you mean the angle of the whole drivetrain front to back to keep the driveshaft C/V angle close to stock?

Also, in order to have the engine clocked @ the correct degrees with the differential, one side of the mounts are at a slightly different angle, you can see that if you look closely at the picture of them on the bench above. We have never had the rubber mounts pulling apart (we dont use the Dodge ones), theres 400,000 miles on our truck and they look fine - we work ours pretty hard too.

It would be hard to put a HP limit on the mounts, i guess we'll have to wait til someone tears them apart... . lol

Are you able to use the stock fan shroud? I've seen some ppl run electric fan, some use a mechanical fan but I haven't been able to figure out if the shroud will fit or not.

Just an FYI, I've got the 7. 3 out, I have the NV5600 (with larger flywheel, spacer etc) and the 29 spline input shaft installed in the NP271. I'm wait for the cummins to motor to get yanked out of the donor truck (will be picking it up friday) so right now I don't have the motor to take measurements off of yet.

our mounts sit the engine level side to side but clock it down to keep the driveshaft angle right... . the engine is set in position to use the cummins fan & clutch. in this case we used the ford shroud - we relocated the reserve tank (and batteries to one side for airflow). the reason you see people using electric fans is their engine is too far forward - the bad thing is, they don't cool very well and overheating can be a problem, if there's one thing you DO NOT want to do to a cummins, it is overheat it.

we have ALL the guages in the stock cluster, including cruise control and tach signal working correctly now, quite a bit of research and development and time involved.

after the AC is filled and we get one piece back invented today, from the waterjet guy, rick will be heading home. i will take alot of pictures tomorrow before they take off!!!

dawna :)

well, Rick will be starting home tomorrow AM after Doug tops off the AC. This has been an enlightening project but we have got it all covered. All our guages work, the AC and cruise work - those were a big challenge, thanks to Doug "the wiz" Alm's knowledge, research and advice (Automate Svs Center, Great Falls, Mt) and ideas, Rolland Rapley our shop tech and Tom Ackerson our friend and part-time tech (and the time Tom spent on research), we ALL learned alot... . this is an incredible truck.

I will take my final pictures before Rick and Greg head out and get them posted tomorrow nite.

Just wait till we get it back here and get a Hot Rod VP44 on it! Gonna rip that Backhoe clean off the trailer!!

I can't wait to look the truck over. From everything I have seen and the conversations we have had this looks to be a top notch job. My hats off to ya!

rick left great falls at 11:30AM this morning - ken talked to him at about 5 and he was at spokane - he is pulling a trailer and must have been running about 70mph - he said he had put in some fuel and got about 14mpg but will get a better reading next stop. he is happy with his fummins... . :)
