1 million mile Ram

There have been two Million-Mile Dodge Cummins in the TDR magazine over the last couple of years. One had close to 1 Million and was featured in the magazine. The other had close to 1. 1 Million and belonged to a member who wrote in and told about their truck. I don't recall what issues they were.



I was acquainted with a fella in Wadesville Indiana, Marty Byrd, who had a '91 Dodge Cummins he used to deliver campers with also. He sold it over 2 years ago and it had around 1,240,000 on it at the time. He replaced the entire injection system at 600k, rebuilt the frontend several times, went through 2-3 transmissions, but the original turbo went the distance. He did 10,000 mile oil changes. It was starting to use a little oil, 1 quart every 2000 miles, when he sold it



There is a member on NW BOMBers who recently rolled 500,000 on his '97.

My Dad just bought a 1st gen with 300K+ miles on it.

Guess it's just about broken in by now.

This is his second CTD. Still owns the first. I might buy it from him, it "only" has 152K miles. It's a 1 ton, too harsh of a ride for my parents.

Both are two wheel drives with 5 speeds.

Anyone know of the highest mileage figures on a PSD. The 7. 3 was pretty reliable, but I read the other day that the 6. 0L is designed to run 250K. What won't run 250K in this day and age? Isn't the D-max designed to run 200K? They both have a ways to go to hit a million. And if more than one have done it you know it isn't a freak accident. I have nothing against Isuzu or International, but facts are facts. Cummins diesels are built to last!!!

I have a 1988 chevy truck I bought as a beater truck for work. To date it has 286,000 miles on the clock. Put's out a small puff of smoke on start up, then runs clean. Passed MD emissions last year, gets 17 mpg and thats from a crappy 305 engine. And to think You could buy a chevy diesel for 2-3 times the price and have it last the same. Pitty da fools. J/K

We have a customer at work who has an 89 k2500, it JUST had it's first major work done, fuel pump and sender, at 315,000 MILES! It's the ONLY truck like it at work. Most of our customers 6. 5s have had at least one head gasket job by 120k

I had the opportunity to talk to a rep from Cummins at a trade show this past fall. We got on the subject of Dodge Trucks with Cummins engines. He indicated that Dodge has approached Cummins about using a "different" model of Cummins engine for pickup applications. Specifically, they wanted an engine that more closely matches the life expectancy of the rest of the truck (somewhere around 200K miles). He could not divulge specifics, but indicated that Cummins was working on such a program to find a "lighter duty cycle" engine for Dodge. If that happens, any Dodge Truck with a B-series Cummins would be work hanging on to! Let Phord & Chivy have the Dispos-A-Motors!

Some how that wouldn't surprise me. And I am sure it wouldn't be cheaper. I just don't believe Cummins would put their name on junk

He didn't seam to indicate that this was junk engine by any means. I'm sure it will still be a great engine, however his emphasis was that it was a lighter duty cycle engine, meant to fit the application more closely. Fortunately, the B-series Cummins is alot tougher, and longer lifed than the rest of the truck! My guess is that a new design engine may be a V configuration???? and may be smaller in size both physcally and displacement-wise???? and may be more "automotive-like" instead of "Big Rig" , so as to attract buyers that don't have diesel fuel running through their veins, like we do!
