10 ply vs 8 ply

I have made up my mind to go with 265s on my 03 dually. I want a better ride than I have now, from your experience will a 8 ply tire give a better ride. I do not tow and carry a camper once in a while. I really like BF Goodrich mud terrain in the 255 size. any thoughts? The local tire guy wants to sell me Coopers?????

The 8's won't be as stiff as a ride plus you have 4 in the back anyways. Not sure about the coopers will have to let someone else chime in about that. Merry Christmas

Load range D tires on the front of a truck with a huge payload capacity doesn't seem like a good idea.

Coopers are good tires, I had good luck with them.



Just make sure you observe the load rating of the tires that you select and you will be fine. This D/E this is widely debated, but the load rating is black and white.



BFG introduced the 285/70R17 in load "range" E, but they did not change the max load (they did lower the speed rating)

Beware that the more aggressive tires are going to be louder and may not balance out perfectly. if you a picky SOB like me tires that that will drive you crazy. I find the balancing problem gets much worse with 275's and larger. I will never own a set of 275 BFG AT's again. I've had great luck with the Bridgestone Dueler Revo AT's plus you can get load range E.

The Revo's come in D & E ratings so make sure you specify the E's. My Revo's have stood up to towing about 18K up some serious grades that have left loaded dump trucks dead in their tracks.

Any thoughts on the Bridgestone Blzzak? now in our size.

This is my third season of running Nokian Hakkapeliitta 265/70 17 E studded snow tires, expensive but very, very good tires in the snow and ice.



It is also is the third season on a set of Blizzaks W965 on my AWD car. I've used Blizzaks on this vehicle for about 10 years and they are very good, studless snow tires.



Tire Rack has Blizzak W965 in 265/70 - 17 Load E 10 ply as a true winter tire for our trucks (the Revo 2 is a compromise tire, it will work as a snow tire, just not as good as the W965). Read their ratings of studdless snow tires. The Blizzaks rate really well and even though they don't have the Mountain and Snowflake symbol (they made the molds for these prior to it), they are rated as "tires suitable for severe snow conditions" (which is what the snowflake and mountain symbol represents).

I had Coopers on a few years ago, lasted about 1. 5 years (18,000 miles). I was trying to avoid the higher price for BFG's that I had been running. Cost me much more in the long run.



I have run D' BFG's two sets now, and have been happy. Tried to get cheap after a job layoff a couple years back and bought Geolanders in a D on my tire guys reccomendation, almost went off the road on the way home, No sidewall strength! Like trying to tke off in an old tail dragger airplane, just constantly swinging.

Went back and he yanked them off (no charge) and we put on 285 70 16 BFG 'E' range which they just started making. Great tire. Rock solid side to side, but no noticeable difference in ride over the D range. Now when it is -17 f outside, aired down Prius Tires are like riding on rocks, so you aren't going to get any forgiveness in any BFG truck tire for cold weather driving. They have to get warm before they soften. And yes, they tell you what part of the tire was sitting on the ground all night! That takes about a mile to go away. Arctic conditions are interesting, if nothing else.

when the blizzacks get warm, they wear much faster.

they are a winter use only, unles you want to replace them a couple times a year.

i used a set on my miata. and they gripped very well, even on black ice. i was taking it easy along the norther cali, coast driving on the road with freezing rain coming down. i went by several cars in the ditch. but when the weather warmed up, they started wearing very fast. i would say the treadwear in temps above 55'f, would be somewear around 15-40. depending on how warm the tires get.
