101 uses for an infrared non-contact thermometer

Had a fire,need advise.

I just got a RayTek MT6 infrared thermometer after hearing of some of the great things to use it for. Seems like a very nice tool. Let's put together a creative list of uses for these devices. I'm not taking credit for any of them that I mention, just repeating what I've heard.



1) Check trailer tire temps for early detection of low tire pressure.



2) Check truck rear axle temperatures when towing (preferably after you have stopped).



3) Check air conditioning cool air and return temperatures to verify A/C performance.



4) Check propane level on LP tanks by noting at what level the temperature on the tank changes.

Well the single guys can use it out on a date to see how "hot" your date gets while "smooching". If that does not work I guess just check your rear end. :-laf

-Brake drums on the vehicle.

On the trailer if it has tandems. If you have quite a difference in temps. One or more wheels is not braking hard enough.

-Can tell you how low you are on refrigerant. By temp and pressure difference. Will require a/c pressure gauges also. Is accurate this way.

-Test radiator inlet and outlet temps. If you always seam to be over heating. Check over t stat housing to see what temp it opens.

-In and out of sun temps. On pretty much anything?

-If you have a dog that lays on the couch. Then jumps off as soon as you walk in the door. You see him laying on the floor next to the couch as if he were there all day.
 
i use the one at work for checking exhaust manifold tempratures at the exhaust risers to see if any one is much hotter/colder than others [rarely done though]



also use it for checking main bearing tempratures and conrod tempratures... the conrod is a good read as your dot hits the bearing shell, but the mains you have to measure the main cap so it isn't as accurate... we're suppose to check the conrod temps everytime one is changed out during running repairs after 10min idling, but i can't even remember the last time i did so [as long as you put it together right and it is getting oil, it will be ok]



doing the mains and conrods is easy on the engines at work though, they got nice big crankcase access covers on them ;)
 
I use mine every so often to see if my old refrigerator is still keeping my rBGH treated milk at 34°F. :)



Measuring HVAC efficiency and looking for 'cold spots' along my foundation and exterior walls is also effective... It allowed me to find intrusion points and better insulate 'em.



I originally bought it because the electric radiator fan never came on in my VW... even in the summer. (the fan for the condensor would work fine, though) I checked the temp of everything with the non-contact thermometer and it was all in-spec... the fan didn't need to come on... it wasn't hot enough. :rolleyes:

Yep, the photocoticide's are very sensitive to temperature changes. Better check the muffler valve on Whitey while you are at it. :D



I have seen them used to test track temperature at the track and to measure asphalt temp on a construction site.
