World's Most Interesting Diesel??

i was thinking the other day about when and if i ever get rid of my first gen and what truck i would want a 12 or 24 valve, the thing i like most about the 24 valve is that it just seems more driver friendly the power band is much wider and that makes the truck better to drive, that is the main advantage to the new engine i see, with the 12 valve i like the idea of not being depenedant on electricity or alternator as long as you get diesel that thing will go forever. i guess my main question is what engine would last longer a 12 or 24 valve

I believe the engines will last the same amount of time. The P700 pump will probably outlast the VP44 and that's a strong point. I've owned both and I like both engines alot. The 24V seems to be louder. My 12V quietened down at around 50K. The 24V is not that far along yet so I'll have to wait and see. I could go either way. Either engine is a fine engine that gives you a lot to work with.

Alan's got it right. Both engines are really great. I prefer the 12V because I don't need any electronic test equipment to do any work on it.

ONE DOZEN!

The big P-pump is a super-bonus. . as for a wide torque curve, that's created more (I suspect) by computer function than by head design/air circulation... certain cuts of torque-plate can do that for you, as well, but maybe not so exacting. . the last (97-98. 49) year-model trucks (Like mine! :D ) are supposed to be the best of the 12-s. (mostly pump-details, not engine differences)

24 valve trucks have no throttle linkage, engine RPM monitored by computer, that can be a little jerky driving off road in a no throttle situation when the engine slows a little and the puter speeds it up. That would be my biggest negative other than I like things mechanical that are easier to fix (most of the time)

The 24's (like mine, I have a 2001) seem to be easier to modify, just hook up a box and go. But the later model 12 Valve engines, have that great pump on them, the P7100. ONLY drawback(and it CAN be a drawback) is you are at the mercy of any Bosch pump shop you go to, to get the pump tweaked for more power. If you don't live near a pump shop, it can be a hassle... That's only if something goes wrong, of course. Rare, but it happens.

The 12's are higher revving, and so seem to be better suited to certain modifications, such as twin turbos.

Yes, I'm very partial to 12's , but I also LOVE my 24, and have no regrets. It would be nice if I had the $$$ to get a 12, so I'd have both...
