Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 12 Valve Engine Noise

I went on about a 220 mile round trip the end of July, and on the way home I noticed that the engine was a lot quieter. I was thinking this is the way it should sound all of the time. Now after about 400 miles of short trips its noisey again. Does this happen to anyone else? I did skip the Rotella fuel addative for a couple of tanks, maybe that is the problem.



I used to drive class 8 and those trucks were about 50% quieter than this 5. 9 Cummins.

Mine does the same thing. I was driving a 100 mile round trip to work every day for a while and I noticed the motor got quieter and the mileage got better. Now that I am mainly making short trips, it's louder. I don't think it means much. I wouldn't sweat it.

Same thing with my 97. Thought I was going nuts so paid attention. I drive 13 miles 1 way to work in stop and go traffic and engine does get louder. A good hard run, especially hauling trailer, and it quiets down. After a couple of weeks of commute it's louder. Guess the CTD is only happy when working!
