Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 12V Driveability

We have a 98 2500LWB QC SLT Auto/3. 54 with 95K, no modifications. With A/C on, the truck stalls when shiftiung between Revese and Drive, and sometimes when sitting idling in traffic. Idle speed is approximately 625 in Drive with A/C on. Since our experience with the local Dodge dealer has been less than stellar, request ideas from members with similar problems. Mine is a '96 Reg. cab auto 3. 54 4x4. I have the same problem has done it since new, dealer never fixed it, I have have charged it doesn't help, I also would like some ideas. Still can't say enough about the truck, even after 2 trannies, rebuilt front end..... It at least starts as compared to my P****RStroke I had. ANYWAY my truck will stall after I give it a jab of throttle, really pulls it down at idle... ... . Hope someone knows!!! Marc

Your idle is too low, it needs to be 750 rpm in D with the A/C on

For an auto trany in my 98 factory service manual it says 750-800 rpm while in drive with A/C on. Yup your idle is way to low.

I have also had the same problem over the past 125,000 miles or so; the idle slips after a while. Also, you may find that the tach is not real accurate in the 650-900 RPM range. According to the tach on my truck I idle around 850 and it sounds a little fast... ... . but drivability is important. When the idle is set too low pulling a 30 foot boat trailer, you goose it and it dies in the middle of a busy intersection... ... ... ... ... .
