1990 f250 cummins swap help

Cummins 4BT Frito Lay Van - For Sale

Been slow going here. . No $. . ha. . so i have been waiting on soem gaskets. . need another Tail 38mm wastegate gasket, and a new HX35 Key hole turbine gasket. . mine is cracking and i don't truck it. . I worked on th eturbo compressor housings. I smoothed them out and painted them. . had to sand em down pretty good. . looks preety good. I alos am trying soem of the VHT 2000 dgree ceramnic exhaust paint in black for the turbine and hot parts like the waste gate piping etc. . hopefully it holds up ok. . I am going to order the gaskets and then once they get in I want to fab the cold pipe and down pipe. . the t bolt clamps and siicone hose connectors are gonna get expensive. . when I do the down pipe I want to use a 4" braided flex section and v band clamps. . then it will go to the 4" bd remote exhaust brake and then out the back. . I'm toying with the idea of a nice staright thru 4" stainless magnaflow muffler with vband clamps . . and a straight pipe section that fits where the muffler is that interchanges via the v band clamps, so I can swap out to straight exhaust easily. I am also looking into turbine heat blankets and wrapping the hot pipes etc. . maybe the cold pipes too. . to keep heat out. . again all that adds up. . lots of little $. . and then the same with insulating the interior. . dynamat or equilvlant is gonna be nice but costly. . hopefully worth it when done though. . any ideas. . ? oh here are the pictures of the compressor housings. .

Those compressor housings came out real nice!

I'm feeling your pain on the misc. nickle and dime parts apn pieces... . It all adds up quick!

:)

Cleaned up and figured out a mounting location for the Heater grid coils. I have been slow with the truck due to lack of funds. Oh well,. . little by little , so I'm doing small little $ projects on it.

This mounting location keeps the coils up and dry and accessable to do wiring or trouble shooting . . also thebrake fluid is still accessible ;)

I plan on doing the whole interior in it. . inside the doors, floor, and roof etc... with a excursion thats alot of dynamat. . argh ha. . hopefully get some progress over the winter. . hope to be driving it by next thanksgiving... 11/10

No, I'm still not done with it. . ha. I had to put the truck on hold to pay some big bills off etc. . in fact I'm just about to get going on it again. I took the first step and I am cleaning / organizing / redoing my garage. . it was and is bad . . Hope to get that done in a day or too then back to the excursion. . Thanks for asking,

Deo

It has already been inspected. I registered it in NY last year when I brought it home. You can change your registration class in NY just by changing the fuel type on your registration. I've done it several times. . mainly with gas VW's I've converted to diesel etc. . Vehicles under 8500lbs are exempt from emissions testing in NY. They are considered " Light Duty". It already has passed a NYS inspection just fine. Only emissions ticket a "light Duty" diesel can get is unecessary smoke, if it smokes, and you get caught driving it so it smokes excessively. There is no roadside opacity test for Light Duty Diesels. And no down state yearly emission test for a "light duty" diesel. I do Heavy Duty diesel testing with my regular job and am a NYS MV inspector and Heavy Duty Diesel emissions certified etc.

Working on getting a Dana 60 front axle to replace the Dana 50. I should be picking the axle up on Sunday. Also working on a getting a rebuilt 271 Ford manual shift Transfer case. I want to replace the electronic shift 273 transfer case. I have new Moog Ball Joints for the dana 60. I'm just debating on doing a gear swap and maybe getting rid of the unit bearings . . argh... I'd like a 3. 55 axle ratio, a arb air locker, and a unit bearing elimination kit. . but thats serious coin... $$

My current dana 50 front axle is 4. 10 ratio. The dana 60 I'm getting is 3. 73 ratio... . mummn ... either I have to swap out my 10. 5 rear's ratio to 3. 73 or just have both axles redone with 3. 55's. If I can swing paying for it. . that's what I'll do. . ARB's front and rear with 3. 55's, and a unit bearing elimination kit for the front axle...

Does any one have a good line on a shop in a reasonable the driving area. . say 200 mile radius from zip 12540. A Shop that is really good with Gear / axle work?... I would like to buy the tools and do it my self but I'm a little nervous. . I've rebuild engines , changed cam plates in VE injection pumps, and what not, but never touched gears. . are they really that bad. . or what? . . I'm leaning toward 4x4 Heaven in Gloversville, NY they advertise in all the 4x4 magazines. . just a 2 hr drive north.

The piece of mine that the trans is new, engine is rebuilt, the 271 manual shift transfercase is rebuilt, and the axles would be rebuilt, goes a long way. . . . I would only have to make sure I keep up on the body.

any suggestions?

Thanks,

Deo

Deo- Why not just get a ford dana 60 axle? lock out hubs, big brakes, ect. seems silly to get an axle that needs a bunch of adapting when you can get what you want in one shot. $. 02.

mummn not sure what you mean. I am getting a ford Dana 60 Superduty axle. ie a late model balljoint one ie from a 2002 F350. I also have a kingpin ford high pinion Dana 60 here too. I was going to attempt to use the kingpin dana 60 front. . but not sure if I can fab it to mount the superduty abs free floating pin style brkes. the king pin has a hammered in guide pin that the caliper consantly rubs on. . also the bolt pattern is 8x6. 5 vs the superduty 8x170. . so I'd have to also use adapters or redrill the brakes. . its still a option just not as easy or bolt on etc. . but slightly cheaper as the kingpin axle already had regular bearings, and decent lock outs and iut was cheap. . the 2002 axle would need the unit bearing elimination kit = $ expensive and thats the problem. . any ideas on the bolt pattern or brake issue?

Thanks,

Deo

thats what i already have. . only difference is no kingpin axles ever had 8x170 bolt pattern or abs..... seems alot easier to just do the 2002 dana 60 and pay through the nose for regular bearings argh... mummn $1800 for bearing setup pays for a lot of custom parts to make a kingpin 60 fit. . ie adapter to use the new abs brakes etc and new hub drilled to 8x170...

Thanks

deo

My bad, I thought you had the older wheel pattern! Yep, any machine shop can re-drill the bolt pattern on the hubs then you need to either fit the new ABS rotors to them or get the tone rings in the old rotors and mount a sensor.

I would stick with the SD Dana 60 and run the unit bearings for awhile until you have the $ to do the free spin kit conversion. Just as an option Ballistic Fab has a hub/spindle kit w/ ABS they made for a Dodge and shortly the SD. They offer the Hub/spindle itself and then you can source the stub shaft, lockouts, bearings, etc. to save some $. You could use those parts off your Kingpin 60. Just another option. Good to see more progress, enjoying the build.

Dodge Unit Bearing Conversion Kit

thanks, Yeah I've been reading up on it on Pirate 4x4. Only thing i don't like is the aluminum . either way i plan on doing it some how. . i probably will run the unless they are toast i think the dana 50 and 60 have the same unit bearing. . cuz my new axle is minus the outer. .

Thanks

deo

You are correct the D50 And D60 outers are the same on the SD's. The only difference in them is the inner axle shafts and the diff, case, and smaller R&P on the D50 of course

Thanks, Thats good news. . the 2003 dana 60 i got has the inner shafts etc. . now i jsu have to figure out if im going to swap both diffs to 3. 55 or keep the front 3. 73 and get a 3. 73 ring pinion for the back... . mummn. . Pid for a set of updated valair hydraulics for the g56 so those should be here soon. . have to decide on my remote oil filter setup. . either homemade, zstrokin, or cummins. . mummn. .

thanks,

deo
