I am not knowledgeable of 12 valves and didn't even own a Dodge-Cummins in '98 but I think that one should have been OEM equipped with a 24 valve.

Dodge usually makes the "mid-year" transitions on January 1 of a year. My '01 bought in May or June of '01 was considered an '01. 5 with four wheel disc brakes.

It doesn't appear to have the quad doors, I am not sure.

Bob 4X4, sag2, can you guys run that VIN and get the ESN??? Then I tell what it is for an engine.

Mike. :)

I think Harvey is correct in the Jan 1, 1998 date for the change over. What I can clearly remember though is having both the 12-valve and 24-valve engines listed in the 1998 Dodge Ram Brochure (probably still have it on the bookshelf somewhere). I had my 1992 and was thinking about ordering a new one at the time. I went to the dealer in probably early February of 1998 to talk specifics and was told that the 12-valve was no longer available.

I ended up waiting until early 2000 to order a new one and it ended up being delivered as a 2001 with a June/2000 build date and rear drum brakes and a 53 block. Great luck I had there. :-laf

That's a 24V Mexico truck. 8th digit determines engine, "6" is 24V and "D" is 12V.

Looks like a twin to mine.

The reason for the mid-year changes to the engines is Federal emissions requirements. Anything built prior to 1/1/98 had different requirements than those after, same with the 1/1/07 cutoff where they switched over to the 6. 7 Cummins. It's all emissions related due to government mandates that take effect on 1/1 of a given year.

In 98, the quad floppy doors were an option, so it's hit or miss. The first 98 12-valve I looked at prior to buying mine was an extended cab, and the guy tried to convince me that no 12-valve would have quad doors. He was wrong.
