168 miles = dead G56 ****Updated Again****

Well I picked up the new truck yesterday afternoon. Today I got a check engine light so took it to the dealer, turned out to be bad fuel fill cap. When I got there I backed into a parking spot and the trans got stuck in reverse. Took both hands to get it out. Afterwards the shifter was so stiff I could barely move it back and forth in neutral. After driving around the lot a couple of times the shifter loosened back up to normal. Put it back in reverse and stuck again, this time forcing it out caused a grinding noise. Got the service writer to drive it, he did the same process I did except when he put it in reverse we couldn't get it out again. They don't know what's wrong but based on the grinding etc, he thinks that I may end up with a whole new transmission!! I'll post the result after they call me.

Is this really what I can expect from the G56?? I never had any problems from the NV5600 in my 04. Not a good way to start out a brand new truck :{

That is a bummer. I will be interested to hear the outcome of your situation. I had a similar experience with an '06 G-56 in January. It made really awful noises in 3rd and 4th, and was almost impossible to shift at times.

Bummer indeed. If I was buying, I'd spec a G56, so this is not a good situation. Hopefully it's an isolated incident and will be repaired quickly.

Hopefully it will be a quick repair. With the way my week has been going, its going to need a new trans, which will be on backorder. I'll let ya'll know what the problem is.

Rescue Ram, did they repair or replace the transmission that you're talking about?

I honestly have no idea. It was at John Elway Dodge in Littleton, CO. We brought the truck back from the test drive and that was the last I heard of it.

I overheard the one of the techs talking to the service writer. He mentioned the fluid level of the trans. Somthing about having some of them coming in a couple quarts low. Guess I better check all of the other fluids when I get it back.

Sure would have liked a better car to drive in the meantime than a Hyundai!!!!

Low huh? Sounds similar to the debacle when they first switched to AAM in '03. If I remember correctly, the rear diffs on new trucks were coming in low and or empty. That is really pathetic QC in my opinion.

But the dealer is supposed to be doing a PDI (pre delevery inspection) on the trucks and I would hope they are at least checking all the fluid levels.

They do that just before the pre delivery safety inspection... :D :D :D

fuel tank cap??? i didn't think the evaporative emissions are monitored on the diesel engines [gas engines need the sealed fuel tank or will set off engine light, diesel can operate with vented tank and no light???]

I checked the PDI sheet on my '03. There is no mention of checking fluid levels & the dealer tech isn't going to do any more than what is required by DC.

Well the final decision is that it needs new shift rails and forks. Apparently the reverse was assembled wrong at the get go. We'll see how it goes. Parts should be in Mon, hopefully I'll get it back soon.

The fuel cap being off while refueling will set a check engine light if it happens to check while refueling. The truck doesn't always check for the cap so you might get away with filling up without getting check engine light but if the cap is bad or loose these trucks will set a code and turn on light for at least 25 restarts. Dont remember the code # but have had it happen on my 05 & 04. 5 while refueling. Now I'm in the habbit of shutting it off.

Good luck with the transmission I love mine, no troubles only 11K

Well after ordering the parts to fix the transmission, an engineer called the dealer this morning and they are shipping a whole new transmission. Apparently there have been three other failures very similar to mine and they want my transmission to tear down and see what caused the problem... so new transmission for me afterall.

No, Dodge knows of 3 other failures similar to mine, nationwide. My dealer had never seen anything like it. Dealer thinks it was assembled wrong from the factory. Something about a ring on the reverse syncro machined wrong causing it to bind, then damaged the shift rail and fork musceling it out of gear. Apparently DC is concerned since they are biting the bullet on a whole new transmission for me just so they can look at the damaged one.

Yeah, but if they want, they can repair and re-use yours on someone else's warranty claim. They don't have to use new parts.

... but at least the one he gets will have been serviced by experienced techs instead of a mechanic at the dealer who has never seen one before. :-laf
