Trucks! on SpikeTV

I don't think the old "kidney bean" style is availiable anymore. I saw a set on a local truck the other day also. Just feeling you out as to what you had planned with them. I have seen some styles that are similar... . not real close. I have always liked them, thats all.

What do the neighbors think of your project?

Dave

Nice job. I still like (want) those wheels if you are getting something else. :D

Dave

Easy there Dave... ... . I've got dibs on the wheels firstist!!1:-laf I've got a 75 Dodge pulling truck those would look good and period correct on!!! I was looking for a set, up until a few months ago you could get new ones from Mickey Thompson, but they are no longer available. :{ Around here we call 'em "slots".

Well I get quite a few people stopping as they are passing by and asking about the truck. Some folks seem to want to hang out with me and watch, others are curious as to when it will be done... As far as my neighbors (the ones next door) go... Hmmmm, I'm not sure :-laf :-laf Hope they aren't opposed to the grinder at 9am! ;)

Just picked up some 2001 Ford Superduty (Excursion?) springs today. I will use these to fabricate the new spring mounts. The longer length will give me a much better ride then the old shorter springs. I'll do the same on the rear.

;)

While waiting for some more steel to show up... I got back to finishing up some of the passenger side body work and cab mount.

HRDROKN,

Thanks for great a write-up and step by step photos.

I'm very impressed with skills and your project.

You've inspired me to start my research on a 12 valve conversion on my 71 Chev. 3/4 ton Camper Special.

I'll be following your project through completion.

Good Luck and Thanks Again,

Ray

Things to ponder...

Well I've been a bit stagnant on this project... the holidays and kids got the best of my time.

I have all the information for mounting the 01' Superduty front springs... then I was thinking about the spacing? The 69' is set up at 32" ... I'm not sure what my new (later model) Dana 60 front axle will have? Maybe 34" or 36"? So I have to figure out if I can change the spring perch on a later model kingpin D60 without re-tubing the axle? Does the cast perch on the pumpkin offer enough room to narrow the spring spacing to 32"? Or do I need to set my spring eye mounts wider?

Hmmmmmm... .

Detroit Lockers.... NOT

Well, I just discovered this weekend that the axles that came with the truck did not have Detroit Lockers as they where advertised. So this really sucks as I was planning on selling the axles to offset the cost of upgrading. Now what?

Rear... .

Front...

They don't appear to be open, the rear looks like a TracLoc limited slip. I'm pretty partial to my factory TracLoc in my 93. What do you think the front is, another limited slip? Or are these the detroit "tru trac" limited slips?

Ya, both units are Power-Locks... . but not Detroits

OK... so my search for that infamous Dana 60 continues. So back to work on the frame rails it is. Here are a couple pics from this weekend.

Strengthening the frame joint.....

Alittle extra clearance for the 78-79 power steering box... .

Front cross member test fit...

Well to bad I didn't see this sooner. This is a neat project but I might have saved you some time. I don't know about your engine as for fit because I have a CR. However, I found out that my 3" body lift that was already on the truck saved me from changing the already re-enforced X-member. I hope you don't run into clearance issues for the axle and suspension.

I had considered that same route... does the CR swap have the same AC compressor clearance issues? The new crossmember resolved that for me, plus it put the center of gravity on that 1100lbs motor a bit lower. Front axle clearance issues will not be a problem for me as I have 10-12 inches of superduty spring under the truck! :-laf

What year truck did you swap that CR into?

;)

Finished welding up both sides of the frame splice and boxed in the joint... .

Same on drivers side... .
