THE DODGE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME I COULD NOT RUN ANY TIRE THAT WAS OVER 2 SIZES BIGGER THAN STOCK. STOCK ON MY 95 4X4 AUTO WAS 245. THIS LETS ME GO TO 265'S ONLY. I WANT TO RUN 295'S. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THAT DODGE TOLD HIM THAT ON AUTOMATICS ONLY THE EXCITER RINGS (?) WOULD MAKE THE TORQUE CONVERTER STAY IN PARSHELL LOCK-UP AND WOULD SOON MESS THE TRANS AND CONVERTER UP. HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS OR IS ANYONE WITH A 95-98 4X4 AUTO RUNNING 285'S OR 295'S WITHOUT TROUBLE?

Jboone,I have a 96 4x4 auto,that had 305/75/16 on stock rims and never had any problems,now i have 33in bfg mud terrains,still no problems,hope this helps

Just my experience, I've ran 285's, 295's and am now putting on 315's and have not had any trouble. My truck is a 5 spd, but my friends 96 is a auto and he is running 295's now without any problems. He has went about 60,000 miles without problems, and he pulls a case 560 trencher around. (est 12,500lbs machine and trailer) I would talk to a transmission shop to confirm this, but I would put them on. They look good.

JBoone, I have been running 295's since the truck was new, have had no problems with the transmission. The only draw back is the speedometer is off by about 10 percent, but that can be fixed also.

Just be sure that after you have a shop you think you can trust put the tires on, Before you take the 1 mile trip home, check the lugnuts to be sure they are tight.
I had tires put on my truck Monday. On my way home (about 1/4 mile from my house) I felt a bump then the left rear of my truck went to the ground and my tire and wheel went rolling by me. I really did not know what to do, my truck is blocking one side of the road and my wheel is blocking the other.
I called the place that I had put the tires on, they came out and got the truck and the stray wheel, strightened the backing plate, put new hardware new brakes on both sides, turned the drums, and new lug nuts (aftermarket wheels).
Well just wanted to share my experence this week with you (if you care).
recheck the nuts!

JBoone:

Like all of the other members that have
already posted I too have 285/75R/16 tires
on my 96' and have had no problems at all.
You will have to have the nylon gear changed
out in the transmission to correct the
speedometer. Dodge has different sizes.
I was able to get my truck within 1/10th
of a mile with the larger tires.

285's and 60,000 trouble free miles. Just another lame excuse for dealers to void your warranty.

I swapped the stock 245s for firestones with 32 inch diameter, (i dont remember the exact size) at about 10,000, and after that set I put on my 285s, which I have had no problems with. Yes, dealers will say anything to avoid the warranty work, but I haven't had a problem. im getting close to having 70,000 on it.

I to have a 95 automatic with 112,000 miles, it has 305/70-16 with no problems, speedo gear has been changed and is right on.
While were on this subject does anyone know if adding larger tires will reduce MPG? I always heard that larger tires would up MPG depending on your ratios? Any input???

i've got the 19. 5's from Rickson, with the Goodyear G159s. the overall height is about 10% taller than the stock rims and Michelins.
The transmission has not complained.
