i HAVE A 1996 3500 4X4 AND THE SILLY THING DOES NOT WANT TO START UNLESS YOU TRY 5 OR SIX TIMES. hAS ANYONE ELES HAD THESE PROBLEMS AND I(FOR A WOMAN) DO KNOW MY TRUCK STUFF AND CAN NOT SEAM TO LOCATE WHY THIS IS HAPPING. iS IT THE IGN. SWITCH PROBLEM THAT THE RECALL IS ABOUT? I HATE TAKING MY TRUCKS TO THE DEALERS AND HAVING THEM COBBLE THINGS BACK TOGETHER. THIS PROBLEM SEAMS TO BE KICKING THE STARTER OUT, LIKE POWER IS GOING AWAY FROM THE STARTER... . IT SOMETIMES WILL TRY TO START AND THEM THE STARTER GOES OUT AGAIN.....

Hello again, two likely possibilities; fuel shut-off relay going bad, fuel return line has started leaking, allowing air to enter the system. Sometimes you can see fuel on the rubber line, but usually not. This line is located next to the block behind the fuel filter. A search on each possibility will bring up lots of reading.

Also, try holding the accelator pedal down a small amount while starting, if the idle is low, this can bring back that instant 1st. revolution start we all love.

I had a similar issue in June of 99. Very hard starting, until one day it didn't start at all. Two fresh 750CCAs cured it - fires up first time every time again. Remember, the truck only needs one battery to RUN, but it needs two to START. If one of those batteries is dying (as was the case in my situation), the strain on the other battery will cause the hard starts until it dies to trying to compensate. Your electricals (lights, windows, radio) will still work, you won't see any computer codes, and while running, you won't experience any problems with one failing battery.

I'd recommend having your batteries tested, and if needed, replaced. Will probably cure what ails you for low $$.

My '96 needed the lifter pump replaced, the painted rubber fuel line replaced, and both batteries replaced... at the same time.

Now it starts fine.

Have an AVR test done so as not to waste any money needlessly. It will show wether your batteries are in deed going bad or are bad, but it will also show a possibily faulty starter motor. i think you said your truck was a 96,if your batteries are still original then i wouldnt be surprised that is what the problem is. Good luck.

well fokes I replaced the batteries last year and it seams to be just a lack of power, being disturbed , to the starter but thanks for the tips

I had an old Power Wagon that acted like yours, took forever to figure it out. Ended up being corrosion inside the the cable to the starter, way up inside under the insulation,no trace of it on the ends. What I figured was happening was that after several tries at starting it the juice would finally arc across and it would start. Try wiggleing the whole length of the cable around,if corrosion is the problem,it probibly won't start again until you replace the cable. Sometimes the bad part of the cable will look different due to the heat. You could also try hotwireing it to see if it's the key switch or the wiring to the solenoid.

TT,
I had the same problem on mine a couple years ago. I too bought batteries that didn't cure the problem.
The relay contact in the starter was bad. Local starter repair shop fixed it for $50, said they did them alot on the Ram diesels. The starter removal is easy enough (Disconnect the batteries!) and you can remove the section of the housing to inspect. Go ahead and clean up the disc and contacts and try it. Or if you are like me and don't like to pi$$ around, if they look bad, get them replaced (or do it yourself if the repair shop will sell the parts). Good luck.

This is from the TST list back in September of 1999.

If the problem is the starter contacts you might want to contact these folks...

Based on the article in the most recent TDR (#25 I think) I called the

Diesel Electric Service Co.
917 Pinal Ave
Casa Grande, AZ 85222-3904

(520) 836-8321

and ordered two of the starter contact replacement kits. He told me right up
front that they were not in stock and was concerned that it might be a couple of
weeks before they were available to ship. I told him I wasn't broke down, was
ordering them as a proactive measure since I had one truck with 130K on it. He
relaxed and we agreed he would take the order (2 x $26. 33/kit plus 8. 50 shipping
for the pair = $61. 16 total) and ship when he had the stock to do so.

The kits (I ordered 2 since the shipping was the same) came today. He didn't
charge my card until the day he shipped - I like his ethics. Very nice and
complete little kit. Has a whole lot more parts in it than I expected for sure,
and some instructions. I will photocopy the article from TDR and put the whole
thing, kit, article, and instructions in the shelf behind the drivers seat just
in case.

Hope this helps,
