Well today I pulled the trigger on a '07 6. 7 4x4 zero mile take out G56 trans. This one should be the AE with the . 74 6th gear od. I will be swapping it for my 5spd Getrag and selling my Getrag. I hopefully will be using Southbends fe 13" clutch set up, that I already have. I hope that I just have to change the disk for a 1 3/8" input shaft. I heard the G56s input shaft is longer then a getrag5spd, longer then a NV4500 and NV5600 so I imagine I may need to source a G56 to engine adapter . . any one have asource?. . also I think, I need to use a 3rd gen G56 starter any one know?... I believe the G56 has 29 spline output so my 205 should mate up ... I'll have to play with it I'm sure. I do plan on twin sticking my NP205 at the same time too. . so it should be interesting. I will be doing a PTO and I'm leaning on doing a direct mount hydraulic pump to provide pressure to run my dump hoist. . I'm debating fabbing a central hydraulic system. . ie a 4 circuit system hoist, snow plow, and one hydraulic port and return at each end of the truck for a hydraulic winch or what ever...

I plan to document it for you guys and keep a thread going. . I hope it works out . I have heard of at least 2 maye 3 that have done the swap in 2nd gens so it shouldn't be too much different in a first gen.

Wish me luck. . does any one know of any one doing this swap before me? Southbend says they think I'd be the guinea pig ????! :)

Thanks

I received my Transmission yesterday. Its definately spotless I hope it really is zero mile take out as I was told. The company does have the 6. 7L it was attached to for sale too. So the story seems legit. 200 lbs via the shipping label. . its relatively light. . the TDR article said 225 lbs... Here are the pics. .

It should have the good gearing in it because it is from a 6. 7 L Truck. I spoke with Peter from South Bend and he is exchanging the 13" Getrag 5sp flywheel and 1 1/4" input Fe disk from the 5spd Getrag for the correct G56

13" flywheel and a 1 3/8" input Fe Disk. Thats awesome!!! He said the flywheel is indexed to fit the longer input shaft of the G56 and the 1st gen starter will work fine. He also said the Hydraulics of the first gen are already the upgraded ones. I asked about a need for a adjustable push rod and he said I wouldn't need one. I hope all goes well.

The Cherlsea PTO people are working a a direct mount hydraulic pump rated at 400 psi to run my hoist. I will sell my other chelsea pto and Williams pump /tank combo.

Any how I had to put up my temp garage to be able to finish this before the snow flys. .

Thanks

yeah most any manual trans have two ports one on each side and most transfercases have a pto port too. . you may not be able to use all of them etc. . do to space and oiling issues etc. . plus its a big chunk of $. . just a pto is about 400-500 bucks. . plus the rest of the parts. . its like 3 times that. . total:eek: oh well. . hopefully it all works good it better hahah

Good project - I'll be watching this intently. I just pulled the trigger on an NV5600 - I'll be doing the conversion over the next year or so. I have been trying to work out the hydraulics to get the 1st gen master to talk with the 3rd gen slave cylinder, but it sounds like it isn't too big a deal - just have to get the system to bleed out and it should be good to go.

Thanks for the post - please keep the pics and details coming.

Coleman, I think I emailed you about that G56 , your wife replied and said you were away . . or something similar. From you signature it looks like you swapped a 6spd out of your trucka and swapped the auto in. . ? Seems like most of th enmega cabs I've seen are autos. . I 've been looking artound for adecenmt priced used mega cab with a G56. . maybe I can pull it off next year... Did you notice a MPG change between the two? etc... Did they ever figure out the megacab A/c issues?

Thanks

Deo

Actually I bought a wrecked 06 6spd I needed a motor so my truck has allways been an auto so could not tell you as far as mileage a friend has a 6spd he gets about the same as I do I prolly would have put the 6spd in my truck if I had not just put 4000 bucks in my trans but I really do prefer the auto once you upgrade the trans they are like a new truck Randy

due to my job, Deer season has my really busy, so not much progres , I am in the middle of the fuel tank fab. I hope to get some pics this sunday, or tommorrow morning. As for the 205 fitment I beleive it will fit. The G56 has the same rear patternas the nv4500 and the nv5600 and both have the 29spline rear out up and my np205 is 29spline input. the couple of guys whove done the g56 in asecond gen had no fitment issues. Time will tell though. I m planning on a twin stick shifter setup for the 205 too. . pics will show that too.

Thanks

Deo

ha No not done yet, although the truck is driving and plowing now. . #ad

I'm gonna do the trans swap in the spring because its a big job outside in the snow. . I may mock it you with a extra engine I have in my garage to check the fitment. . I picked up used 2nd gen engine to trans adapter in case i need it etc. .

Hopefully more updates in the next months or so. .

Any updates? My buddy has a 93 W350 with a 97 CTD and a Getrag that isn't holding up to the power. He has 3. 54's so rpm isn't an issue. His truck is always heavy loaded. He will also need to run a pto. It's nice that you have volunteered to be the guinea pig. Do you think you will have to mount the trans lower because of its size? Shadrach
