Competition 2 NE Ohio Diesel Pulls, Aug, 10, &11

Competition 12.5sec 24v on #2

I know these questions have probably been asked a million time, so if someone can point me in the right direction... it would be appreicated.

I am planning on entering a local pull in a few weeks; Freeburg Illinois. Small dirt track, mostly gasser locals, after the tractor are done.

I have a 6 speed HO, 2500... 3:55. .

What is the best technique? I am assuming 4Low3rd, try to hold it around 2100. . and don't shift, just keep the momentum going.

Any body got any advice? I don't want to make TDR look bad out there!!

Thanks!

Tips?

Don't do it. :(

2100 will slip your stock clutch pretty bad.

Get under way as low as possible, back off a hair, wait for the clutch to catch, then ease back into it.

If it hops, let off.

Most of all have fun!!!hehe

Thanks... I meant once I am under way try to hold 2100. I am assuming I can get moving with 800 or so. What about gear choice? Do people shift at all?

And of course I know to keep the windows up so I can gain better aerodynamic efficiency...

I would say leave your drivers window down. The guys on the lawn mowers pulling last night would throw one of their arms way back for better traction. I bet you could get another 5-10 feet out of your truck just by trying that. :-laf :-laf

The stock Dodge cummins guys last night were using 3rd low. shifting is bad don't do it. You might throw in some tractor weights in too. Oo.

Id ease the clutch out, then once its engaged, hold it to the floor, and do not let up,the governor will not let the motor rev to high. evryone here uses 3rd low range too with a 6 speed.

My truck is pretty much like yours, driveline wise. I'm pulling for my first time next weekend, and plan to get the truck moving at lower rpm and let the clutch completely engage, then let the governor do all the work afterwords. I'll let you know how that works if you'd like. From what I've heard, keeping the rpm's up is pretty important.

I forgot one other thing,we alwasy lower our tire pressure to about 25 in the rea,and 30 in the frontt. Does it help-i dont know, but most guys do it,and it helps to keep form sinking in our loose track here.

Went to a pull that the mitchell's attended Friday night in Somerville (West) TN.

There was a guy driving a NEW 24 Valve 3500 Club Cab 4x4. He pulled stock class only. His first run he tried to shift gears!:--)

GRRRRRIIIINNNNNDDDDDDDD!!!!

Declined first run (DUH!)

Second run he tried it again and actually got it engaged for a half way decent pull. Made 300Ft in the stock class.

They brought back all 300FT + trucks for a pull off with the sled turned up.

THIS TIME someone finally told the guy how to do it!!!

(I think Dave or Lorretta went over there before the poor guy hurt something).

He wound it up to X,XXXRPMs in 3rd gear I'd guess, and eased off the clutch... ... ..... 24XFT I think? Came in 2nd in the pull off after being way back in the pack.

What about us Auto guys?

I'm going to try my first pull thursday night (maybe)

Its a county fair deal, 5500 and 6500 classes. First I gotta see if I can make weight.

Can stock auto guys pull without destroyin the transmission? I dont have the extra cash for breakage, so at the first sign of a hop, I'm lettin off, but I have always wanted to do this.

Hey all you sled pullers

I'm just trying to get some opinion on whether it would be feasible to try a 4th gear pull with the 6th speed transmission. Doing some math calculations on gear ratios, it seems to me that 4th gear (NV 5600) being at 1. 69:1 and the (NV4500) being 1. 39:1 in 3rd gear, plus factoring in the 2. 72 reduction at the transfer case, there would only be about a 3 - 4 MPH difference at a 2500 RPM. I would think 3-4 MPH would be a definite advantage with minimal strain. Does this sound reasonable, or am I just blowing smoke (figuratively). :) or  ( OEM Tire size also being equal )

Advice is worth about what it costs????

This advice is from a guy (me) that had never pulled a sled a year ago today. I did one hook a Scheid's last August, three at Muncie in June this year and maybe 30 other hooks here in Missouri this summer. Some pullers have 20 years experience.

Variables to be considered are weight and type of sled, track condition/soil makeup, tire diameter, pressure, type tread, rear end ratio, truck weight, hitch height, etc... ... . But the number one thing to consider on your first pull is HOW MUCH CLUTCH do you have. I'm not try to make this complicated as sled pulling is fun and can be a very rewarding experience, our CTD's perform well in this sport. However if your clutch won't get the sled up to warp speed you will be happier and money ahead to pull in a slower gear. 1rst gear high side is safe on most any clutch, 5 or 6 speed with 3. 54 gears and reasonable tires. If you have a set of 38" boggers please read and reread Sled Pullers post above (memorize every word:)) regarding take off. If you use 1rst hi with a 31" tire/no slippage you will pull the sled 13. 9 mph at 3000rpm. I use 3000rpm as I see no reason not to expect that out of our trucks, anyone that disagrees, please jump in here and tell me why. If you have 35" tire you will pull 15. 7mph. 1rst high will probably not win any local pulls but you will make a respectable distance, beat most brand X's, get practice and not work or break your truck. I was at a pull that had awesome traction on a claymix spongy track. A young man had won placed first and second earlier that afternoon at another sled pull, his first pull. He came to the track with a beautiful albeit huge set of MT Claw tires. His 6speed bombed truck had a popular 13in single disc aftermarket clutch. On his second try to move the sled in 3rd low, he pulled maybe 12 ft. , clutch smoked.

If you don't have a pulling clutch (dual disc or better IMHO) put on some nonagressive tires when you practice pulling in a faster gear, spinning your tires is good;) ;) , spinning your clutch after full release is :{ :{.

Calculating speeds with a 31" tire and 3000rpm gives:

5sp. 3rd low 17. 2mph

6sp. 3rd low 14. 1mph

6sp 4th low 20. 7mph 35" tire 23. 3mph

When I decided to pull, I called around about clutches. The Mitchells didn't try to sell me anything but patiently answered my questions. Finally they told me "your little truck is not going to hurt our clutch":D :D. I bought it, tried to break it, and Oo. Oo. ! I believe they are correct... ... . good luck all, have fun, and sorry for the long post. Larry Crawford

Great post Larry. I try to run the RPMs up to 5000 while trying to hold the clutch back. Once I build at least 70 LBs of boost I just let it go and hang on:D :D :D

Okay Don, you ol' veteran, we envy you. You're living proof that "Sled Pullers have more fun"  :D.

Is there a diesel class in Washington, MO this Thursday? We missed you at California last night, had eight or nine CTD's pull.

I will need to add weight to my truck for the pull i will be in Wed. night. I am using tractor weights. Where is the best place to put the weight at in the bed? i am assuming it would be slightly forward of the rear axle???? Thanks.

Johnboy

Headed to Clinton County Fair. Just outside of Lock Haven right off of I-80 old exit 25. 5500 and 6500 classes, not even sure if I can make weight. All these darn standard transmission guys, I dont know what I can do with my stock slip-o-matic (other than ruin it)
