No, not in cummins... at least not an ISB.

I was talking to a guy about his tractor (Rebuilding tractors is my OTHER hobby) and he told me that the pro pullers can get close to 200 PSI of boost in those high performance tractors. I have seen some pretty wild setups but did not think that 200 PSI was possible. I know that some of those JD's will smoke thick and black even at idle. If they do hit 200 PSI I wonder what type of EGT's they are seeing?

Kinda off topic a bit but I though I would get some good responses here.

Thanks

Phil

Probably shoud of posted this one over in the Comp forum...

As for 200 PSI, I would say its very possible with fuel. I have heard that the EGT that those guys see are up around 2000 degrees.

I know for a fact that some local pro and supers are hitting 150-175 lbs. of boost. Our super farm tractor is hitting about 70 psi. with about 800cc of fuel running thru it. The pros and supers are however are running alot more fule then we could ever imagine.

This is what happens when they run that kind of boost and the engine doesn't stay together.

In this picture - the BILLET cylinder head stayed firmly bolted to the block, but the block split down the side and lifted the liners right off the rod/pison assemblies. The block splitting problem is further aggravated by folks running really big liners... this reduces the strength of the block from all the machining - but you get a lot more inches³.

Hey was that Max Simpsons tractor? If it was I do remember that happening. But AC blocks experience that more than deeres or IH's due to the fact the smaller 426 ci standard displacement. Most of the top guys in the pros and supers that have Deeres are running close to 700ci.

The name of that tractor (I think... ) is "Hoe Handle".

We gotta talk pulling tractors sometime, 832. I've got some pretty general questions...

The Super stock International Harvester I used to have had a 436 ci inline 6 with 3 stages of charging. 2 TA-18s and a TO-6 staged one after the other. We would leave the line at about 4500 to 5000 rpm and hit 225 to 235# manifold pressure on a hard hooking track where the engine was working hard. The latest 3 stage setups actually use 4 chargers. 2 smaller units on the 1st stage and than 2 more in stages. It takes lots of fuel to make big boost. Somewhere between 700 and 1200cc!! The estimate is that a good 436ci to 540ci 3 stage Super stock makes somewhere around 2000 to over 2500 hp.

wow i need to read up on these diesel engines makes our baby cummins look tamed. Hey are they powering any of these pulling tractors with the new 6L. hehehe.

I would like to see and hear some more info on these tractors... . cool stuff

Don't know about where you guys are at, but around here the past couple Sunday afternoons (around 11:30 or 12:00, I think) on ESPN they've been showing these bad boys in action. Last week, a guy kept bouncing his front end so much that he broke the front axle! Those things are sa-weet to watch. Yet another toy to put on the list once I win the lottery.

Better plan on a BIG lottery, build a new one that will compete nationally and you will spend $200,000 to nearly double that, add to that the normal breakage during a year of maybe $10,000, plus a class 8 truck and trailer to haul to events. .

If you need to see some information on the Superstock tractors try. www.pulloff.com/ or http;//members. tripod.com~fondabarr/ There should be some photos there on the tractors. It will be rare for you to find any photos of the engines, big secret stuff there. There is some information in the Hugh Machinnes turbochargers book. He goes into stageing turbochargers quite deep. Check on the fonda barr page for Wild rides and Wrecks, fun stuff and there are a few photos of what happens when they try to compress a fluid in the cylinders. .

If there is anyone out there that would prep a 5. 9 block properly and tripple stage chargers I would have to guess 1200 to 1800 hp would be easy.

Sorry cant get the Fonda Barr, "Midnight Mistress" page to hook up.
