My dad has a 2002 quad cab lwb 4x4 2500 with about 65,000 on it he just bought it a few months ago. . latly he told me it has no power when started unless he lets s it sit and warm up for about 5mins. . if he just startes and drives awy it is totally dead . . i am planning on a gauge install as soon as $ comes for egt,boost,trtans,and fuel pressure. . i hope it is not the injection pump taking a fall. . or a bad lift pump that hurt the vp44 any ideas. . i haven't swapped the fuel filter yet ... plan on doing that soon. . i looked through th efaq but no real relevant same problem... any input what do you guys think?

do the key on - key off code check and hope you don't have a 0216 code!

I am getting a problem with mine, progressively getting to the point you

describe, taking it in for both pumps next week... I can't remember the

exact drill for how many times you cycle the key, 2 or 3, and leave it on

the last time - stuff will start flashing up in your odometer, take time and

watch all of them till its done. You can search on here and find out what

the codes mean. 0216 is bad news for the injector pump, from all I hear.
 
That's another thing mine did... before I installed a new VP-44... had to let it warm up good or it was totally dead pedal... sorry, sounds like a VP gone bad.

I had a similar problem with my "01". The fix was a new map sensor. The colder the outside air temperature the longer the engine had to run before the problem would clear up and I could get above 15-20 mph. In my case the outside air temp had to be about 0 F or colder before the problem kicked in.



I could back out of the garage (engine @ about 65 F) and have good throttle response for about 30 seconds, then it was like going into limp mode.



I assumed it was a case of the map sensor developing a temperature sensitivity problem and the cold air cooling off the intake manifold and map sensor. My guess is that when it got too cold it stopped registering any boost, as the engine would slowly warmed up and more heat was transfered to the intake manifold I think the map sensor would warmed up above its problem point. At 0 F I would have to drive 1-1. 5 miles before things warmed up enough. At -10 F about 2 miles, -20 F about 3 miles.



I didn't get any codes.



Since the problem seemed to be temperature related my first guess had been the air temp sensor, but changing that didn't made any difference.
 
The ECM advances the timing when the motor is below operating temp.



Maybe the ECM is not advancing the timing and is making it a turd till it warms up ?



When my truck was below operating temp and the comp on 5x5 and the Catcher the valves would float.

well I've been on vacation for a week in OBX so i will check the codes tommarrow and let you guys know. . i hope it isn't the inj pump... I kept telling him to put guages in it 6months ago when he got he . . he just retired and the $ hasn't been coming in as much lately. . mummn... ohwell cross our fingers. .

I just got the codes it had two the: p 0216 and a p 1693. . its still under the warranty any tips on how to get the dealer to do the inj pump under warranty?. .

DM are you are the manly man of men :-laf Take it easy on the truck and throw your $$$'s my way instead. Me I kinda like my head gasket and cylinder walls and rings.

Deo, If you want to test that lift pump you Could[/b] Bump the key and pop open the drain (on the side of the fuel filter Mr. First Genner :D ) real quick (Within 15 secconds of bumping the key) for a seccond and see if she is moving fuel. If you see no fuel ... Dumm da dum dum. Oh and be sure that drain snaps closed too! The lever on those deals can be in the down position but the plunger can and has been known to hang open. If THAT happens you will suck air back IN when the LP stops runnin'. When the key is bumped you have about 20 secconds to do this as that is the time the LP will run for.



As for the dealer ... bring it in it is the ONLY (And prolly first :-laf ) stock vehicle you have in the family.
 
Check out my post " Dealer installed an in tank lift pump". I had the same symtoms. I got an in tank lift pump conversion and a new injector pump under warranty. You may get the new lift pump and pay for an injector flush before DC will warranty the pump. Good luck.
 
Just talked to my dad. . the dealer replaced the inj pump under warrenaty but did not change the lift pump. . seems fishy. . I will see if the stock lift pump is working asap... . the dealer sounds cheap not to change the lift pump at the same time... . We are gonna do guages and a aftermarket lift pump soon. how is the PE 4200 PUMP that Scott sells over at Mass Diesel?

It is the only stock diesel in my family so far. . hehe proabbly be just my moms car soon as she has a 2004 toyota stocker. . dads is gonna lose a muffler and resonator soon . . too ha. . i want to swap som e 355 or better in sometimes too replace the 411's

It only did it when I was WOT ,@ 50*, Comp 5x5 and below operating tempature .



So it didnt happen very many times.



I was like ... . hey whats thats noise????... ... to my self then I realized what its been doing ..... so I decided not to do that any more.
